wild pig dropped with birdshot

Me my step-dad (larry), my friend (jared) & my pit (main) were bird hunting. The birds stop flying right before sunset so larry says let's go check the feeders, see if we can see a hog. Ok, so we're riding checking the feeders and larry says Stop! I stop, main leaps out of the truck larry right behind him. Me & jared jump out of the driver side and run around the truck. I got this little 22 mag pocket pistol & jared has his 12 gauge. Well we get around the truck & larry says here they come. Lol..I see this pig running straight @ me with my dog on his 6.

A step & a hop l8r all 275 lbs of me r in the back of the truck

well right b4 the pig gets to the truck it turns toward jared (he wasn't quick enuff to make it in the truck)

. Then BOOM pig Drops in its tracks! Best shot he will ever make, right behind the shoulder, heart shot.

Turns out the pig was 100 to 120 # sow but hey it was coming pretty fast

Sows taste better when killed after a dog chases them...

either sex will level you from 40 pounds on up.
How many feet was the shot give or take?

the pig was running at your friend with your dog behind the pig...

so he shoots and the bird shot spreads....any hit the dog behind the pig? What about the dog? Dont shoot the dog! HAHAHHAA

No he didn't hit my dog. He was up close & the shot didn't spread much at all. It was 6 shot. I was a litt p.o'd cuz my dog was right on that hogs ace.

I'd be mad my dog didn't get to "seal the deal"...

At 6 feet the shot likely made a 1 inch entrance wound give or take a quarter inch...

I was sorta ticked off. That would've been his first catch. I've only let him go once on an 50 pounder but it was all set up for him. U know training & that was last year. I think he's got what it takes to be a "hog dog".

This might have been one of those pigs that hasn't learned to read. Otherwise the "bird"shot would have failed.

I guess human skin must just be tougher then pig hide.

at 12 yds

I was turkey hunting, wearing full gillie camo, and the 100 pound sow was alone, and just slowly rooting along as she approached me.

At first, I pulled out my 9 mm handgun, but then I realized the 12 ga with 1 1/2 oz of copper plated #5's had more knockdown power than the 9 mm pistol.

I had equipped my Rem 870 with front and rear sights on the ventilated rib, so it was easy to take aim just behind the sows elbow.

At the shot, she took off on a death run - heart shot, for sure. She piled up after about a 40 yard run. When I dressed her, sure enough the top of her heart was ripped to shreds. The entrance hole was about 1 1/2 inch in diameter, and the golf ball sized wad of spent #5 bird was just under the hide of the off shoulder. Both lungs were mush, and on the near side a rib or two had been blown away, undoubtedly causing the fragments of bone to cause catastrophic damage to the lungs, adding to the damage done by the shot itself.

Yep. 9mm at 115gr to 124 gr at roughly 900-1200 fps vs. 656.25gr of shot at 1200 fps (Turkey loads).

No contest.

The 12ga shotgun is a devastating weapon at close range.

I used to carry a couple loads of No 8 birdshot when deer hunting to use to finish off cripples. From a few feet away, a load of No 8 will make a nice 12 ga sized hole right through a deers head. They get real stiff soon after.
