While I recognize the 870 Remington is definitely the reigning king-o'-the-pump guns, I think the Winchester 1300 is really underrated. JMHO.
Apparently, I'm one of VERY few. I just like the feel of it, and I shoot well with it. I do like the 870 Express Deer Gun with the Monte Carlo stock. That helps with cheek weld, and proper sight alignment. Alright, I'm going shopping now for an 870. Last edited by fxdrider; December 23, 2008 at 09:39 AM. |

870 with mag extension and number 4, 5 or 6 shot for inside the home use...don't frown about using small shot...I've seen several guys die from a load of it in the chest....you can't stop up all the little bleeding holes and they don't go through the sheetrock and kill a loved one...

Winchester Model 12. I have one made the year I was born (1953) that my dad gave me over 40 years ago. I also have a Remington 870 Wingmaster, but the Model 12 will always be my favorite.

With proper shot placement, wall penetration is not a big issue with shot guns as with FMJ rifle ammo that fails to hit bone. Shotguns will not spread enuff to allow "close to" shooting. Center of mass is still required to stop the threat.
I am stuck with #3 buck in my 20 gauge do to lack of larger shot availability. If you do not trust your ability to hit your target, practice is the answer, not bird shot. At some of the shorter in-home distances, bird shot can and will penetrate walls with enuff force to cause injury to those on the other side but cannot be counted on to be a flawless round for HD. Don't get me wrong... I would rather use #8 than nothing at all... Brent |

#8 for home defense, no way. If the BG is confronted and is armed, he is in your house, his intent is to blow you away, and you want to go easy on him. I load one BB, six 00 buck and 0ne slug. The old saying is "Bird shot for the birds, buckshot fot the Buck and a slug for the thug"

With the birdshot debate replies, I thought I was accidentally reading the same thread as I did earlier today.

The Rem 870 is the benchmark, regardless of whether it is the best.

I have seen the results of small shot when fired into the thorax at 20-25 feet and it is devastating and will kill the heck out of a perp...I don't know about pixie stuff and wafers up in snake infested Meechigan...probably similar to their football team, just a figment of someones imagination...no pun intended

Never fear, I'm a Gator! More truthfully, I'm some sort of indentured servant repaying loans to the University of Florida.
My opinions on birdshot fully have been fully expressed in the last 150 birdshot vs. buckshot threads. |

Best Shotgun?
My vote goes against the general grain here. It would seem that the overwhelming majority of the shooters on this site like the Remington 870. Well I have to vote for the Browning BPS. The fit and finish of the BPS is as nice as my 300 Weatherby Lazermark (blueing is beautiful) and that says a lot. The action of the BPS is butter smooth and I like the steel receiver. I love the bottom ejecting of the spent hulls. Everything is where it should be on the BPS. What is there not to like except price. Yes the BPS costs more than a 870 but ya get what ya pay for boys and girls.

Mossberg 500 series
Owned the Rem 870, Win 1300 and Mossberg 590. Which did I keep? The Mossberg. Better placement/ergonomics of safety and bolt release.

I picked Remington 870, with Browning BPS close behind.
