I reviewed my post and I forgot to add that I carry a 4th gen Glock 23 at this time. I also want to change my desired weapon to a Glock 20 instead of a Glock 21.

I'm not a cop but if I were I'd take the Glock 17 since I wouldn't have to worry about concealing it.

.357

I think a 357 in 4-6" and a 12g is adequate for anything.

I live in a crime infested city, and in 20 years I cannot recall a single news story where the police needed anything more than what they used 60 years ago. There simply are not insurrections, heavily armed paramilitary terrorists or heavily armed crews shooting up the place like in the move Heat.

Something about police dressed in black with military weapons, armored cars and drones rubs me the wrong way - it certainly hasn't lowered the crime rate.

^ Not to nitpick, but actually the crime rate these days is near an all-time low.

Unfortunately, that just isn't the case. These rare instances are the reason virtually every (at least that I've seen) police officer carries a patrol carbine in their car.

The average citizen doesn't always have the luxury of waiting for the police to show up and save them. Just the same, the patrol officer doesn't always have the luxury of waiting around for SWAT to show up with more fire power.

In the STL Metro area the 870 is still standard issue. However, the revolver has long-since been retired (not to knock revolvers ) in favor of the 92 (Glocks as well in some Counties). The AR's, however, are frequently deployed when there is a major incident/crisis of some sort (just not seen in a standard patrol car).

That said and in no way to disparage the venerable 870 or 500 (pump platform in general), but if I were an officer and had to patrol with a SG instead of carbine, I would want a Benelli M4 or Remington 1187P (perhaps a 590A1 for beter pump capacity if semi is not a choice). The key variable here in the "Hood" is the perpetual Bugetary problems that fiscally prevent the Department from procuring a huge block of AR's or Semi-Auto SG's (it's not a training issue that many mistaken the failure to migrate over to).

I have carried an XD45 (garbage), M&P45 (flawless), and now a Sig 1911 Extreme. We can carry whatever we want after our year probation as long as it is a .45 and we use department issued Federal 230gr +p HST.

I would want the same gun i started with, a Smith & Wesson 681 in 357 mag. I would also be content with a Glock 20, 21, 37, 22 or 17, in that order, with the right loads

My last year as an officer was in 1988. During my 17 years, I always worked for an SO. Always in a rural county and my Sheriff's that i worked for always told me if I could qualify with it, I could carry it. I carried a Security Six in .357 for the first two years and switched to a S&W 629, 4" stainless 44 mag for the duration of my employment. Still have that one and will never turn it loose. I feel very comfortable with it and an additional two speed loaders for a total of 18 rounds of Hornady Personal Protection JHP ammo. If I need moret han that, I think I am in the wrong place!!!

In my career I have carried 38spl, 357Mag, 9mm & a 1911a1 45 auto.. If I was to choose today I would carry a Sig 226 in 357Sig or 40 S&W.

Admire your ranks and what you've accomplished greatly. Therefore your opinion matters much to me.

Where I was hired we were issued Glock 22's which you know is a .40S&W.

I used to love that round until I began with 9mm and .45 exclusively. Sold off most of my .40's with an exception of two for the reason of being more accurate with the 9mm and .45.

Also, from my opinion..with marginal performance differences.

My point is, with your history...Why would you move from 9mm, .45, 38spl (which you had good ballistic performance outcome with)

And move to supersonic rounds like .40 and .357SIG?

Going by the list, it would be a Sig P229 in .357sig. I already know that I love Sigs and I have a P229 so that choice was easy. However I chose the .357sig for it barrier penetration.

I know the Internet distorts the tone. I'm asking in a serious way. I'm curious as to why for uniform use.

Something in DA/SA,,,

The make and model wouldn't bee all that important,,,
Assuming it is reliable the action type would be my concern.

I would want a DA/SA action with a safety decocker,,,
Beretta, Sig-Sauer, or even my CZ-75B would do.

As a side question,,,
Has anyone ever seen an American cop carrying a CZ-75 pistol?

Aarond

Not a police officer... not to say there is not an agency that issues them. I worked for a private security firm that exclusively used the CZ-75.

Constantine: I started with 38spl then 357Mag the 1911 was my backup Then the city issued and required us to carry S&W model 15's with Fed +P+ 110gr 38spl's (treasury load). Then the city went to Sig's in 9mm. The .40 and 357Sig are my choice. with the .40 & 357Sig you can use both with the 226 just change barrels no mag or recoil spring change is needed

My choice would be either a Sig 229 in 40 caliber or a Glock 23 in 40 caliber. Both work for a uniform duty weapon, off duty weapon and if the officer gets promoted to detective, it would work in that capacity as well.

Make Mine a 1911

Really? May I ask to know a few reasons?
*Sturdy auto that will take abuse and keep working
*Can be used as a bludgeon without falling apart
*Heavy, slow caliber (if it is chambered in .45ACP) that has relatively low recoil so followup shots come quickly
*Heavy, slow caliber that is less likely to over-penetrate than smaller, faster calibers
*Large frame with a decently long sight plane for relatively long range fire
*Manual safeties that prevent ADs for those decently trained
*No fear of using reloads
*Ability to extensively modify the gun and hang attachments on the modifications (e.g. Picatinny Rail)

either a 4 or 6 inch S&W 19 or the same in Ruger Security Six in 357 Magnum. Alsoa 3.5 inch Bazooka with 20 rounds mix of H.E and A.P, just in case you need some back up.

They are nice for long-range encounters. Flamethrowers are better for social distances.

I had both assigned to me as an Army MP. At my first unit, it was an M67 90mm recoilless rifle.

At my second unit it was a CS dispenser that could be modified to fire flame instead of CS. It was a nice supplement to my 1911, M16, and 12 ga.

Whatever my partner carried, caliber and magazine. If a revolver, same caliber that would take the same speed loader.

I had a choice between the Glock 21 and Glock 19 when my department went to issuing Glocks. I like the .45, but I'm not a big man with big hands and I just did not care for the big blocky grip of the G21. The G19 was easier to manage and I do shoot it well.

When I was taking the NRA Basic Pistol course, during lunch the instructor, who is a retired Air Force sky cop and retired law enforcement firearms instructor opined very articulately that had the Miami shoot out not ocurred, or had a Silvertip expanded like it was supposed to that most police agencies would still be carrying 9mm autos or .38 Spl revovlers.
