shell holders
picked up some new dies today for my sons 30.30 (rcbs) and forgot to get the shell holder...so I thought I'd see if any of the ones I had would work.
needed a #2 for this set and didn't have one but I did have a #18 (44mag) and it seemed to fit just fine , now before I go and start can anyone tell me the difference between these, is one thinner than the other would be the only thing I can see. (allowing the case to go up farther into the die? ) not that big of a deal can just run up the a local shop and pick one up ..just had me thinking. Matt. |

Yep ! ya hit the nail on the head hammered54 the 18 is thinner ,or at least the ones I have are .
Did`nt measure but visible .

thicker/thinner? Rim 44-.514, 30/30-.506. Thick-44 mg, 60 , 30/30 .063, then the difference, the diameter of the 44 Mag case in front of the rim is .457, the 30/30 case diameter is .422. that leaves .035 thousands smaller diameter for the 30/30 than the 44 Mag. what difference will it make? I do not know, but the case may not center and when lowering the ram the rim could be less rim contact with the shell holder.
The deck height should be the same, .125. F. Guffey |

As long as you lube your brass, it should work fine. Allowing the brass to self align might even help with accuracy. Put a rubber O-ring under the locking nut, and you just might have something.

not so much the "deck" height but the flange on top of the holder, thinner would allow the case to be pushed up farther into the die yes? and would that not allow the case to be sized a bit farther down?.
all other things considered the case seems to fit the shell holder perfect no alignment problems at all. it's not that big of a deal its only a 8 dollar piece it just got me over thinking it I guess. off to the store...Matt. |

The "deck" is the flange. No matter the other dimensions, all shell holders are specified at 1/8th inch (.125") depth and all sizer dies are made to work to that. |

“allowing the case to go up farther into the die?” back to deck height, the deck height of both shell holders is .125, that means the deck of the shell holder is .125 from the bottom of the die, when the clearance between the die and shell holder is .000 with the ram up the press is in full length sizing/minimum length mode. Then there are the + and or – factors.
