Which commander size 1911 - Page 2

I have a Carden Edge 540... Dan does this mean that if I bring over a Kimber Pro TLE II you won't make me an IWB holster for it?? I'm always braggin on the one you made for my Glock 23. I've been looking closer at Sigs, but the Kimbers at still at the top of my list. Dan Wessons are pricey, for a DW I can get a Pro TLE II and that Glock 21 Gen4 I want...

Can I order a Colt 1991 Series blued commander (O4691) with the custom shops tactical package or do I have to just find one out there.

You have to buy the 1991 and then send it to the Custom Shop for the tactical package. I don't think you can order it that way from the factory. I would ask Colt, but their people are probably in Las Vegas for the SHOT Show at the moment.

I bought and like the Sig. The only problems I have had are with hand-loaded semi-wadcutters (it doesn't like them). It carries and shoots well, and the night sights are great for carry.

I have 3 Colt Commanders . I also have a older Dan Wesson When they were priced with in reason . I say go with the Colt

Sorry DW fans I like mine its a great pistol, but I will buy a Ed Brown before another DW . They lost me when the about doubled in price.

I said to go with Colt simply because it's a good value for the future. Colts tend to appreciate or hold their used-gun value pretty well.

Since you've narrowed the field, I wonder if you rejected the S&W 1911 series for any specific reason. I have one of the older 1911SC lightweight .45 ACP "Commander" pistols and it's a slick shooter.

Current 1911SC E-Series pistols have the bobbed frame and enough features to please a lot of folks.

Well, I voted Colt, from among your choices. You can't go wrong with Springfield either, IMO.

But, dang it Olympus, posting those pics is just plain sadistic for those of us who didn't get one of those when they were still making them.

I had a 3" Kimber and had endless problems with it despite multiple trips back to Kimber. The FTF and FTE were so common that I would not feel safe relying on the gun for self defense. From comments here I am thinking that the 4" Kimber is a much more reliable weapon. Even in the 3" the feel, look and accuracy of the gun was excellent. Any of you out there with the ProCarry 4" Kimber: if you had to do it again would you still buy this gun, or would you prefer something else in this size?

I've owned eight Kimbers (as well as three Colts and three Springfields, and other 1911s). I also own a DW CBOB (about which, the less said, the better).

I carry a steel framed 4" Kimber every day, and shoot it about once a week.
That S&W E-Series in on my short list, because having a 1/2 pound lighter 1911 is attractive.

For my money, the COLT is one of the BEST Commander 1911s out there... a flawless, dead-accurate shoot!!

If you have the money get a Dan Wesson. Otherwise, if you are looking for front strap checkering I'll second the S&W recommendation - The front strap isn't checkered but grooved and it does provide a good grip. I have a 1911PD commander that I bobtailed and it is my EDC.

Got my mitts on a DW V-Bob Commander Black Duty finish today. Incredible trigger and I like that more aggressive 25lpi front strap checkering. I also loved those super rough grips. They didnt have a DW to rent so I rented at TRP and a Wilson Combat. The TRP was very good but the WC must have been worn out because it couldnt shoot nearly as well. Handled lots of new 1911's today I have to say I was very disappointed how much the Colts rattle while shaking them compared to DW, Kimber, or the Springfields... I almost bought that DW... Is a $1999 a decent price??

That's 100-200 too much for a black DW valor.

I'm also not impressed with Colt fit and finish. Held a Wiley Clapp Colt 1911 atomic last years NRA show and it was about as poorly fit as they come. I've just never felt the need to own one.

Gunbroker or an online dealer would be the cheapest way to get a new DW. That price is too much. At least two hundred.
They really are solid beautiful 1911's. I absolutely wouldnt part with my Vbob.
I see the bob look is really catching on...

I think it's also worth mentioning the Colt Defender series.

Colt O700D Defender 3" is one of the few 3-inch 1911's I've seen work reliably.
A big plus for me is that the Hogue grips seem to automatically align the sights when presenting the gun.
Also available in 9mm.

If you want the blued version, the Colt 7810 Defender New Agent .45 is your model.
The New Agent series features trench-style sights to minimize size.
Also available in 9mm.

The Colt 07812DA Defender New Agent DA offers a DAO trigger. Also available in 9mm.

Colt even has a full sized "Government" model that is DAO and uses an aluminum alloy frame.
A lightweight DAO "Government" model. The 1991DA.

MSRP on these guns is about $1,000 ... ± $20 or between about $850 to $900 sticker price.

I wondered the same thing myself at first.

After more thought on the subject, there's obviously a market for such a pistol for people who want a 1911 for carry, but don't feel comfortable walking around Cocked, and locked, with one in the pipe.

My father is a perfect example of someone who would get great use out of this gun. He's in his late 60's, and has been carrying a revolver his whole life. He recently started carrying a 1911 style gun (Para Hawg 9) but he doesnt feel comfortable carrying the gun in Condition 1.... and to tell you the truth, I don't like the idea of him carrying that way either. A DAO would be a really nice option in his case. A DA/SA would be even better.... Are you listening Colt??

Today i purchased a Dan Wesson Valor Bobtail in Duty ceramic black. Retail is $2077, SDL Gun club wanted $1999.99, and most online are over $1800. I paid 1599.99 on gun broker. I'm working on the road until the beginning of next month so I'll pick it up from my FFL when I get home. Along with handling this gun compared to the other decent quality 1911's, this video sealed the deal for me:

540, Have your dad look at the Para CCO models with the LDA triggers. Para started this DA 1911 trigger trend and its interesting to see others trying to do it. I carry a Para CCO 1911 with the LDA trigger and mine has been great.

That is my daily carry gun. I have had zero problems with it. It is super accurate, I like to show off at the range with this gun, makes me look like a much better shooter than I am.
