Good scope for $300 - $350?

I just bought a Remington .308 and am looking for the best scope I can get for $300 - $350. I'll be using the rifle mainly for target practice - 200 - 300 yards. I know that Leupold & Zeiss are good brands and, as a photographer, I know that Nikon usually has good optics.

You don't say what magnification you desire but I'll toss out a couple of options that fit your budget.

Bushnell Elite 4200 in 3-9x40. Really a hunting scope but this is a heck of a bargain for a scope of this quality.

Weaver Grand Slam 6-20x40
. Grand Slams are outstanding scopes.

Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15x40 Tactical. An exceptional target scope for the money.

Weaver V16 or V24. Weaver V-Series scopes offer exceptinal quality at a bargain price.

I agree with the Bushnell Elite scopes recommended by sholling. I had have an Elite 4000 6x24 scope on a Remington 700 bench rest gun that I've had for many years. My Elite was made when the line was manufactured by Bausch & Lomb, but I think they are still exactly the same now that they are being made by Bushnell. In fact, Bushnell added the rainguard feature when they took over the line.

One of my good friends has a bench rest gun similar to mine but he put a Leupold 6x24 scope on his that cost 3 times what the Elite cost. There have been many times thru the years where he couldn't shoot late in the day at our favorite range because stray sunlight was causing him sighting problems that I was not having with the Elite.

I'm not saying to look at 6x24 scopes because that would be overkill for a hunting rifle but the line has some nice scopes in the 3x9 or 3x10 range. Something like this: http://www.shopbushnell.com/detail/BSN+423944M

Good luck and good hunting

I just re-read your post and realized that you are going to use the 308 for target. When I saw the Rem gun in 308 I automatically assumed hunting. You should look for a higher power scope if you want to shoot out to 300 yds. That was precisely why I got the 6x24 to begin with. BUT - the higher power in the 4200 line would probably be above your budget price. Take a look at the 3200 in the higher powers - they might fit in to your price.

The only word of general advice I would give is not to go cheap on the glass. You can have a beautifully accurate rifle, but you may never appreciate it's accuracy with a cheap scope on it.

In that price range, I feel that a Nikon is a better choice than either a Leupold or a Zeiss. In fact, my last scope purchase was going to be either a Leupold or a Zeiss but I ended up with a Nikon Monarch. In that price point, I felt the Monarch was cleared and had greater light transmission than either of comp priced scopes I was looking at.

Scope

You can get a nice used Zeiss in your price range and it will have the lifetime transferrable warranty.

A vote for either a Bushnell 4200 or a leupold VX-II, both are excellent scopes for the money. The 3200 5-15x40 Bushnell is also a great choice.

For punching paper @ 300 your going to want 16x min. Look for a used Bushnell 4200, grand slam, or monarch.

I'd look for a Leupold VXII 4-12 or VXIII 4.5-14 (used) Not to hard to find the 4-12 in that price range, maybe a little cheaper. Little tougher, but out there are used 4.5-14's in that price range. Could even find a 6-18 if you kept your eyes open.

One of the best warranties and they'll hold their value

Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 goes for around $330, very good glass.

I bought two of the ones Riggins 83 suggested last year. Both were the century limited addition. I think I paid about 350.00 each. They came with a custom knife, sheath, commerative coin, and it was in a retro tin. You can still get them for about the same price. Just for the little cost differnce the knife was worth it. They are both on Ruger No 1's now, and working great.
