Served my country?

US Army Reserve 1966 - 1972.

Had to vote "no." Reservists were not, and are not, considered veterans unless they were called to active duty beyond the basic requirements of reserve duty.

I don't mind not being considered a veteran, but I'm not sure that means I didn't serve my country.

Best regards to all.

fomalley, you're a veteran in my book, and I'm willing to bet a whole lot more of our members will agree with me. You served and that's all that counts. Thank you.

Fomalley, Big Don is right. You signed your name, took the oath, and took your chances. Consider yourself a vet. We do!

reserves

"they also serve, those that stand and wait" there are those that don't consider me a viet vet because I only sreved on ship that stood of the coast and provided NGFS. They think there is no risk. I consider being shot at by a 200mm shore battery a risk. Especially when all you have to shoot back with is 5" guns (aprox. 126mm). We did have the advantage of movement where they were in a fixed position.

served

I served in the Navy from 1976 to 1980. Two tours of duty in the far east. Nearest I came to war was Carters attempted rescue of hostages in Iran in 1979. Lucky for me nothing came of it, as far as war. The ship I was on broke down while in the Persian Gulf, and we left. Found out about the rescue attempt in Pearl Harbor on our way back to California.

United States Navy

I served 23 years, 3 months and 9 days in the US Navy! I joined the Navy in Mar 21, 1977 and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in Jun 30, 2000. I finally received my official retirement certificate last month transferring me from the Fleet reserve to regular retirement status. It would have been 30 years if I did not retire, now I am no longer subject to recall.

fomalley, you are a veteran in my book too!
