Newbie Difficulties

Greetings,

I'm pretty new to reloading (three weeks). I use a Lee Classic Cast 4 Turret Press and have had great fun and pretty nice shooting of my first two batches - one 9mm and one .38SPL.

I just finished loading 50 rounds of 115gr cast LRNFP (truncated?) over 4.0 grains of WIN 231. This was in new Winchester brass and with Remington 1 1/2 small pistol primers.

Two issues:

1) on the first step - carbide sizer/decapper I had a fair number of casings hit the die and not smoothly enter the die. In a few cases this crushed the edge of the brass and was thus was thrown away. I tried the shell holder at different positions, but it still happened with some annoying regularity. Perhaps the turret is not rotating quite right??

2) upon finishing the job, I noted a bit of brass shavings on and about the base of the press. Not a big pile, but concerning. I think I may have too much crimp, which makes the casing a bit tough when entering the bullet seating die. Any other thoughts?

Thanks again for all of the assistance.

Jeff

you use crimp die after seating die, maybe you just typed it wrong, but if you are doing it right yes to much crimp could leave shavings. to make things smoother use a spray case lube doesnt matter if carbide die or not makes it run alot smoother
