6.5 creedmoor 123g hornaday eld-m 4895 loads - Page 2

did some more testing today but thistime with 4350 , still having primer issues though

but to start
43g of 4350 (imr) got the 123g eldm's moving out of the 20" barrel at an rounded average of 2850fps

5 round group was very accurate compared to the factory ammo minus a single flier on the first shot of the group which was all me

i only lost a single primer , but noticed the firing pin had punctured 3 primers out of 20 rounds , no overpresure signs on brass

on a side not i got threw some loads on the grendel as well
26g of 4895 got me a rounded 2400fps average pushing 123g eldm's out of the 20 inch barrel
27g of the same got me a rounded average of 2525fps and had a much better group but starting to show slight presure signs so cant push them any harder

factory hornaday black eldm had an rounded average of 2600fps

so im done with trying the 4895 in the grendel

aparently after doing a factory reset on that scope i re-entered my zero cordinates wrong or messed up some of the ballistics data in the scope

I had some problems with Large Primer 6.5mm Brass with my first 6.5mm CM and it turned out that the primer pockets were wearing out after just a few reloads using Norma and Hornady brass.
Turns out that the chamber was a bit tight and raising the pressure, but I had pressure signs also.
I got Savage to bore the chamber out a few thousandths and the problem went away.

I switched to Lapua small primer brass and average more than 20 reloads before I have to replace the small rifle primer brass. The accuracy is slightly better with the small primers when I use CCI BR-4. CCI 400 is close but just a bit less accurate.
Federal 210M primers were third and 205M primers were worst.

my delivery from brownells will be here on xmas eve and then ill have a bunch of small primer pocket brass to try
i did inspect a few rounds today before i went out shooting and it seems like the winchester primers i used stick back out of the brass a lil further then the factory ammo primers in both the s&b and hornaday stuff
ive got another brick of cci #200 and #400 primers comming with that order

trying the cci's in the brass i have + trying out the small pocket brass is my next step
once i get my primer issues sorted im going to see if pushing those 123's to 3-3100fps or so in the creed is possible

and id like to see about 2650-2700 out of the grendel also if possible

other then that the good news is i shot both the grendel and the creed today at 300-625 yards all rounds on target on a 20 inch gong out of both , since we have our cows out in the field i couldnt stetch my shots out to 1500 yards like i wanted to

the bad news is my gong wont hold up to the creedmoor with the 123g bullets 1-400 yards comming out of the muzzle at 2850-2900fps

it did hold upto the 140g 2400-2500fps stuff just fine though and no issues with my grendel unless im in really close but im not shooting at the gong that close anyways

when i build the rest so i can have them spread out at 250y intervals ill prolly stack 2 plates per gong on the close up ones , i make them out of old discs off our disc harrow so i got tons of them laying around there pretty damn tough specially considering they are only an 1/8th to 3/16th thick

when my new creedmoor gets here ima be pretty dang busy lol

i may have found my primer issue in the s&b brass , when resizing/removing the primers the pin for removing the primer is actually slighly larger then the hole in the bottom of the case so its pushing some brass up into the bottom of the primer pocket , my die set uses the small pin as well.
this also explians why ive broken a few pins with the s&b brass

i caught it this morning when i decided to go ahead and deprime/size all the brass i had , theres no additional resistance on the press over normal which i dont understand. but i noticed it when i was checking every case for lenght with my calipers.it doesnt do it in every case it was about 40% of the brass it was doing it to

im going to carefully clean up the burrs in the primer pockets and see what happens, my brownells order gets here today so ill have some small primer brass to try out as well

so 20 rounds since finding that out and switching to cci primers , the cci primers deff seat deeper in the case and i havent poped or pierced a primer yet

switched to h4350 and right now im at 43g and 5 shot string threw the chrono got me

the gun does not like 43.5 so going back to 43g of powder need to check accuracy out at longer ranges hopefully everything is good would be nice to be able to use the 123g bullets across the grendel and both creedmoors to make buying supplys a lil cheaper

It gets a bit confusing when you mix your Grendel and creedmoor results in the same post--it might be helpful to separate the two.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the StaBall 6.5, developed specifically for the 6.5 Creedmoor. There's a thread on it in the handloading forum. That forum is where this thread really belongs, anyway, so I'll move it.

been a bit busy but managed to squeeze in some more range time and trying out other loads

dropped down from 43g to 42.5 grain and switched from the 123g eld=m to the midsouth monster match 123g bullet

groups in the creedmoor tightened way up with the bullet change and im seeing a consitant 2890 fps out of the 20 inch barrel using a 2.775 aol

i was loading the eld-ms to 2.750 as per the load data so after i shot the ms bullets i traied loading the eld-m a lil longer and accuracy picked up a bit with those as well and an average of 2940 fps but they still werent shotting as tight as the mid south bullets so waiting on those to get here before i do anymore

i had only picked up a sample pack of those mid south bullets to try out and have an order in for a 500 ct pack of them but it wont be here till friday
