IPSC Beretta 92G Vertec - Holster

Howdy,

I'm using the above listed weapon for my frist foray into IPSC shooting (Production/Major), however I may go into a 1911 model when I become better. I'm looking for suggestions on a holster and mag holders.

I wouldn't 'mind' spending $200 on the holster, but then again who wants to spend more than they have to.

I would also like the mag holders to be adjustable in angle.

The Safariland 007 or the RHT CR Speed holsters are in the running, but I'm open to other ideas as well.

Any thoughts on a belt would be taken warmly as well.

Maybe I'll meet some of you at the Area 1 Nationals in a few weeks!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
New Shooter

First thing first, all production is scored minor. Race holsters of the type you describe are expressly verboten.

Now, as far as holster, the Bladetech DOH is what a lot of top production shooters are sporting. I am not sure if they are compatable with inner/outer velcro belts, but it would be worth looking into.

Also, I don't know if speed mag pouches are production legal. I know that in single stack division they muct be "reasonably concealable and suitable for daily carry".

Here is where to find the holster:

Six different colors, lefty or right, and different belt widths.

CR Speed for your belt, it's stiff and the gun will not shift around on it.http://www.ghostholster.com/cr_home.htm

A lot of Beretta shooters use the Wilson Tactical Assault holster, this is suede lined and will not mar your finish. http://www.wilsoncombat.com/l_tactical_assault.asp

The Bladetech DAO is also popular, especially if you have love handles or a short torso, as it offsets the holster and lowers it. http://www.blade-tech.com/DOH-Droppe...er-pr-824.html

Both the TA & DAO are compatible with the CR belt.

Check the USPSA rules, if legal then the CR mag carriers are great, if not then uncle miles or Bladetech carriers will do the job.

In Production Division, all shooters are scored minor so don't bother reloading to make major. You'll be stressing your 9mm cases anyway if you try to.

Get a 'D' model hammer spring, part no C99001 from either BUSA or Dave Olhasso http://www.olhasso.com/beretta/index.htm This will reduce your DA trigger pull by around 4 pounds. Dave can also do trigger jobs.

I use a Blade-Tech injection molded hoster for my Glock 35. They are nicer than the Uncle Mike's Kydex I used to use because the can be adjusted to be much looser(quicker). They are only made for Glocks, 1911s, and Berettas. They can be had on their website for about $40 with a double mag pouch and a belt interface and a paddle. Mine's worked great.

Howdy,

Thanks for the info you really enlightened me on some things. The links and specific information provided blew me away.

The person who held my Safety class told me with my gun I'd be shooting Production and it's a .40 cal, so I thought it would be scored Major. I need to really read the rules in detail.

As it stands right now I'm using my deparment issued belt and holster (Uncle Mike's - NP114) and they are triple retention, so even when it comes out smooth I'm losing time. In fact our department is looking into a different holster, because we don't like it.

This is what had lead me to my search for a holster/belt/mag holder set up.

Maybe a better question and one that I should start a new thread with is considering what I'm shooting with, should I be shooting Production.

If your gun is a .40 cal, then it should be a 96G, not a 92G. If you are shooting .40 cal, then I recommend reloading, partially for cost, but mainly because you can load down. A big heavy bullet at low speed gives less muzzle flip than a light fast one.

Your gun is realistically only suited for USPSA/IPSC Production Division or IDPA Stock Service Pistol. The other divisions realistically require made for competition single action pistols. You can campaign in USPSA Limited/IPSC Standard and you will be scored major, provided your ammunition makes powerfactor. You will be severely handicapped by the double action first shot and the relatively long and heavy single action trigger stroke. A 'winning' Limited gun will be an STI single action with a mag funnel, extended mag release, adjustable sights, heavy barrel, heavy dust cover, 1 mm of trigger movement and a two pound trigger. An STI shooter tried my exs Beretta and asked what was wrong when it didn't shoot. She thought the single action trigger slack was the actual trigger pull!

Don't discount your gun, Ernest Langdon and Dave Olhasso consistently placed in the top five in IDPA using Vertecs.

You could down load your ammo to minor power floor and have a very soft shooting production gun. Or you could load to major power floor and shoot Limited 10 and have a relatively soft shooting gun.

Any gun can be well suited for a particular division, but there are gradations of good.
