Pulled WW1 30-06 Bullets SAFE??
A while back I bought some surplus WW1 30-06 in bandoleers for my head stamp collection, I pulled the bullets from every round, almost all of the cases had cracks in the neck due to:
1. the tension around the bullet 2. corrosive powder used in 1917-1919 factory loads My question is are the bullets safe to reload using modern components i.e. powder, brass and primers. I polished the bullets in my tumbler and they came out nice and clean, are there any suggestions or restrictions I should know about. Also would I follow loading procedures for more common 150gr .30 caliber bullets with a cannelures? I would be firing the reloads in a REM 710 bolt action. Any help would be appreciated greatly as I do not want the bullets to go to waste. Little more info: the only case in good condition was a Winchester WRA 18. Gotta love Winchester. |

The bullets are
probably okay if they are brass colored (gilding metal). If they are grey or silver colored the are cupro nickel and will foul like heck.
Too bad you tore it down as it has real collector value if it was original WW I ammo. DO NOT reuse the cases, as there were many soft headed cases in WWI that helped create the myth of the "unsafe" low number 03's. BTW is was the Primer not the powder that cause corrosion. Depending on headstamp some of these could be worth $10.00 each and a complete intact bandolier.... well I sold a 1902 dated Krag one for $400 three years ago. |

Bullets will be fine if gilding metal. I load lots of pulled bullets and they work just fine. I haven't seen the nickel bullets in a long time, and they were probably worth big $$ to cartridge collectors but you're probably aware of that.

It was a mix of WRA 18, U.S.C.Co 17 and 18, a few FA's and maybe some REM's, don't remember. And all of the bullets were silver in color, and Brandy you had to mention Krag ammo, I've pulled about 2 1/2 bandoleers of FA ammo for the bullets, I did save the rounds without neck cracks, they sit right next to my 6mm Navy, U.S.C.Co, FA, REM-UMC and WIN .45 ACP. I have saved every case I pulled from in the hope someone might want them as these cases are over a hundred years old and are disappearing of the surplus and show circuit.
