Every county in TX, every state in the union. Coming soon to a suitable habitat near you, if not there now.

What's the take on eating ferals? I've heard that the big ones are gamey and not terribly good. I'd imagine with a long enough smoke/low and slow, they'd all be decent.

I wonder if the state will do something along the lines of what they do for deer season- Hunters for the Hungry. I'd have a hard time killing a bunch of hogs and just leaving them to rot.

Quality of game is dependent on the hunter to a great extent !!
The old boars can be a bit strong. Younger pigs and sows are usually fine. Dress them out immediately and chill the meat . Chasing them down with dogs can't help flavor. Diet also has an influence ,though they eat almost anything . I've had some that tastes the same as domestic. Understand trichinosis and cook accordingly.

I think another issue is, how do you move a 400Lb boar? It's a lot of work. A lot of work to field dress them, a lot of meat to haul... and it sounds like a lot of work to make them taste good.

Why bother? Just take a 200 sow.

It's weird, in Illinois you can't get a game license for pigs.

Even though hogs are not protected, it might be better if they were.

Since hogs aren't legally protected you can't get a nuisance permit. Wildlife damage permits cannot be issued for feral hogs since they are not protected by Illinois laws and therefore the Department of Natural Resources has no authority to issue a nuisance permit. Because a nuisance permit cannot be issued landowners cannot bait or shine to control feral pigs.

Control of these animals has to be during daylight hours. They
can be taken after dark if encountered while legally hunting another species.

So basically you can't bait for them, although during deer season, if you just happen to be near a supply of food that would attract deer that so happens to attract hogs, then you can shoot the hogs.

I think the state would be better off categorizing them as game with a year-round season on them and allow baiting...

Around here we have a saying on the vermin, "There's land that has hog problems and there's land that's going to have hog problems, its just a matter of time." If you have low-lying wet areas its a good place to start looking. We have a standing rule out at the club, shoot on site if you see one even a piglet.

Here's a link to a report of the Swine status in New York. So far it looks like they've only been found in 3 counties: Cortland, Onondaga and Tioga. I imagine they'll be spreading out soon. DEC wants to completely eradicate the hogs.

Thanks for that ! I see there is a 'Breeding Facility' here in Sullivan Co ,I guess for hunting preserves . Probably where the escaped pigs that I heard about came from. The comment was that some people have pork in their freezers !! A good a use as any !

Well another thing I think that has to happen, is that people who let these thing go or allow them to escape should be punished.

There are people who are making money selling these "Hawg Hunting Expiditions" and all that, and then there are farmers who are getting their creeks fouled, getting their crops ruined, and hog farms that have to shut down when a bore breaks in, and turkey and quail hunters are losing out because the pigs are decimating the bird populations.

It's just not equitable.

Some are better than domestic pork. If I shoot an adult boar I field dress him carefully and will walk away if he doesn't smell right.
I make some great Italian sausage with most of the meat so I don't care if it's not as tender as store bought.

As far as eating them, the taste is largely dependant on where you are located. My place in TX just SE of Waco is covered with them and we kill them with extreme prejudice. I do not like the way they taste at all. There are no ag crops around so they live on what they can find. I also have land in Mississippi and most of the pigs I ahve eaten there have been very good. Plenty of soybeans, corn, and other yummy things for them to live on.
