grey metal finish?

I'm thinking of finishing a rifle in some sort of grey finish. I have seen some Ruger Rifles with a grey color finish that was darker than a stainless type finish. Any Ideas or suggestion's I don't think I want to "paint" the gun with a bake on type finish.

You can do a rust blue, after about the third application you begin to get a nice gunmetal grey color

I had my shotgun powdercoated black chrome which is a dark grey.

That's Rugers Target Gray finish. Don't know how its applied though.

Browning has had some grey guns that had a electroless nickel finish.

Nickel or hard chrome applied over a matte sand or bead blasted metal finish will give you what you want.
Acid finished white metal can rust easily, so it's not recommended.

French Grey finish? This is a case-hardending process without the mottled colors.

NP3 from Robar is a silvery gray (among otgher things).

Contact Brownel's. They used to have the instructions on how to French Gray a firearm available for the asking.

If you want a clear, professional job to add service or protection to your firearm, I highly suggest www.apwcogan.com www.bearcoat.com www.robarguns.com .
CeraKote may be available in a dull gray or "battleship grey" color.
Robar's top notch NP3+ helps clean/support the weapon's surfaces but it's not cheap & gunsmith work may take 3/6mo.

Bearcoat.com comes in grey too and they have short shop times for most firearms. The rifles are in use by some sworn LE agencies & SWAT.
Brownells, www.brownells.com is good for the "kitchen table gunsmith"

MidwayUSA.com offers a lot of stuff too.
