Serial number inquiry.....

Hello. I just purchased a beautiful Model 67. 38 special, 4+" barrel.
The serial number is CNX62xx.

I would appreciate any information you might have regarding this gun, especially when it was manufactured.

Thanks.

Book only covers up to 2004. CNX is after that.
A call to S&W's customer service will get you the DOB over the phone for free.

That said, the model 67 is the stainless version of the older model 15. Both are excellent guns.

Serial number inquiry.....

Thanks, Jim.

I will call them tomorrow.

I have no experience with S&W guns, but, I know when I am holding a quality piece. I really like this gun.

Thanks again for the information.

Greetings all. S1204

Hello everyone,
Looking at my grandfathers old revolver. Butt of the gun has S 1204. In side the frame it shows 44626. I have been reading through the threads, but don't see many references to the lower number S's. I have attached a picture of the butt S#. No luck with the smaller number, camera won't zoom clearly.

I will swing by amazon next and see about one of the books mentioned in the threads.

Just looking for dates, or any info on this old beauty.
Thanks all, great site!

It's very difficult to work with just a serial number. Can you provide additional information, such as: caliber, number of chambers, barrel length, etc., as well as a few photos of the entire gun?

S&W 29 serial number S2204xx
1961-62 (in this case, almost certainly 1961). The SN range was 220000 to 227999.

I would like a date for a model 10-7 serial #9D49979 if possible.

I would also like to know if the serial number on the inside of the (crane?) is supposed to match the one one the grip frame?

Thank you

1982 - the SN range was from 9D44501 to 17D8900. Are you referring to the area on the frame that's exposed when you swing the cylinder out? That's referred to as the frame cutout, and if there is a serial number there (in the form, for that model and time period, of a 7-digit alphanumeric with a D in it or perhaps a three letter plus 4 number combo) then it should match what's on the butt, but there may be other numbers stamped in that area that have no significance.

1948 - the range was K18732 to K73121.

Thanks Flyfish

On the part you describe and I was guessing at it reads:

3D
31651

So i am wondering if this part is original to the revolver. Would you have an opinion?

Thanks FlyFish. My dad seemed to think it was older. It belonged to his best friends dad. Dad thought he carried it when he worked the railroads in the late 30s and early 40s. guess it must have been something else.

The "S" is not original to the serial number.
As FlyFish noted, we need more info and/or pictures to help you.

Lesgeaux - if I understand correctly it sounds like you have two different SNs stamped on the frame, and that's got me stumped. Jim, do you have any thoughts?

I'm pretty sure the 3D----31651 are assembly and inspection numbers.
The number on the underside of the grip butt is the standard serial number location. During the 80's/90's S&W sometimes also stamped the SN in the yoke cutout location but it would have been a single line. That, and having two completely different SN's is very unlikely.

Hello Everyone,
I recently picked up a model 60-3 in great condition but without any of the original packaging or anything like that. I was hoping to get a little more info on the gun and it appears I have found the right place.
Serial # BEU52xx
Thanks in advance guys

Somewhere between Dec. 89 and Mar. 90.
The model 60 is built on the J frame and is the stainless version of the model 36. In 1996 S&W went to the J "magnum" frame and started chambering then in 357 magnum also.

N148237 = 1973.
AVA5830 = 1987.

With that caliber and serial number it's a .38 Military and Police Model of 1905 - 4th Change, one of the series of predecessors to what's now manufactured as the Model 10. Unfortunately, yours falls into a wide range of possible dates with insufficient information for exact dating: 1915 (at SN 241704) to 1942 (at SN 700000). You can interpolate with that information to get an approximate date, but it will only be approximate.

Your M&P, by the way, is close to the approximate SN at which heat-treating of cylinders began (316648), at which point the guns are supposedly safe to fire with .38 Special +P ammo. However, there's a lot of differing opinion on whether the early heat treating was really done properly, and although I'm no expert in this area I'd strongly advise against using +P in this gun, assuming that you're planning to fire it at all.
