H-414 & the 30.06

I recently picked up a 1lb can of H-414 and was thinking of trying out in the 30.06. I have a Ruger M77 lightweight , 22" barrel. I'm wanting to use the Hornady 165 Spire Point.
So have any of y'all tried this powder in the '06? If so what worked , or didn't?

It compares very favorably with the best for medium-heavy bullets running at what QuickLoad calculates as moderate pressures.

The following contains information for longer OALs than in load tables,
and in excess of Manufacturer's recommendations.
Do NOT start higher than 90% of these loads

Refer to the Hodgdon for workup.

I only use H414 in .22-250 but I recall an old old gunzine headline when it was new on the market: "This may be what Winchester uses in factory .30-06!"

Since the Hodgdon takeover of Winchester powder distribution, they have rationalized W760 and H414 as the same stuff. I started with some older powders of those labels that were definitely not the same.

When I first started reloading back in 1991 that was the first powder I loaded with in the 30.06. It worked great in a number of loads but I mainly used it with 165g Sierra Spitzer BT.

Strange thing is that the Hodgdon 8th Manual (p527) says that the H414.58.5gr load under a 165gr bullet (post #2 above) is likely "OK" -- though max.

The Hodgdon website, however, says:

165 GR. SIE SPBT
Hodgdon H414
OAL: 3.300"
Min: 51.0gr 2,678fps 41,900 CUP
Max: 56.5gr 2,877fps 49,700 CUP

It's also in CUP... which make me think it's old data.
(Note I didn't say bad data, just likely to be "dated data"

This is why reloaders have to be thinking all the time.

I tried 760 with 150s and got a huge fireball. Innaccurate, ES of 168fps. Got ES of 26fps with 4064.

IMR-4064 is what I'm using right now, I'd like to try something new. Picked up a lb of Superformance too. I'm not impressed with the listings Hornady had for it in the #8 manual though.
Using Winchester Lg rifle primers with the 4064, but was wondering if the H-414 would run better with a magnum primer.

Magnum primers have worked better for me. I had erratic ignition with H414 and standard primers. It shows up as vertical stringing of your group. It measures extremely well, and 52.0 grains gives me a bit over 2600 fps with a Sierra 168 HPBT (24" bbl), which load I use for target shooting.

I load for my cousins 06 and the pet load is 55 Gr. of W-760/H-414 with the Hornady 165 Gr. SPFB Interlock . The rifle is a Rem. 7400 . John's been killing deer with this load since 1987 , with all game recovered !

I use H414 exclusively for the 30-06 and have been doing so for many years. Looks like I am not alone. I have never used magnum primers, always WW large rifle primers. I have tried many powders and IMHO H414 provides superior accuracy.

There is only one exception when I do not use this powder and that would be when reloading for the M1 Garand. For the Garand I use 4895.
