Buying Ammo online and Being 18

It sucks.

Midway USA and Cheaper than Dirt seem to discriminate against people under 21 who want to legally buy ammo.

Why can't I buy it? I'm old enough to buy a rifle, and the ammo, but not online? Why?

Federal law does not prohibit an FFL from selling rifle ammo to an 18yo, but does prohibit an FFL from selling handgun ammo to anybody under 21.

Quote:
7.******** Ammunition – Definition, § 921(a)(17)

*********** a.********A non-prohibited person may acquire ammo in any State from an FFL or a non-licensee.

*********** b.********FFL may not sell ammo to a person under 18 years of age or hand gun ammo to a person under 21 years of age, § 922 (b)(1).

*********** c.********Hand Gun Armor Piercing Ammo (APA), definition § 921 (a)(17)(B)&(C).

*********************** 1)********Illegal for any person to manufacture or import APA unless it is for the United States, exportation or testing authorized by the U.S. Attorney General, § 922 (a)(7), 5 years.

*********************** 2)********Illegal for manufacturer or importer to sell or deliver APA unless it is for the United States, exportation or testing authorized by the U.S. Attorney General, § 922 (a)(8), 5 years.
Some retailers may just like to keep things simple; some states may have more restrictive laws; some rifle ammo could potentially be viewed as handgun ammo.

MidwayUSA and CTD may just be applying the LCD factor to avoid potential hassle.

Note that it is not illegal for a non-prohibited 18yo to buy ammo (rifle or handgun) from a non-FFL.

I had the same problem. At least you do not live in NJ where the local Dicks Sporting Goods claims that NJ state law prohibits them from selling any ammo that can be fit inside a pistol to anyone under 21 or without a firearms ID card - meaning anything other than 12 guage due to the Thompson Center Encore supposedly

They just generalized to make things easier.

It is kind of like doing bidding on Priceline for hotel. They technically require you to be 21, just in case one of the hotels may end up being one with a minibar inside (required to be 21 of course..)

They are thinking... just in case you use the ammo on a handgun.. Which really is not the case... "but just in case.."

Oh well I am sticking with Cabela's. Their stuff is cheaper anyways.
