5.56mm/.223 or 7.62mm/.308 for Long Range Use in Semiauto

The M110 (military version of the AR-10) was approved by the NRA as a service rifle about 2009. The CMP, however, did not agree for their matches.

The Army has been using it as their main service rifle for long range and doing pretty well. Since 2007 when the NRA changed long range to exclude 600 yard matches (e.g. all at 1000 yards or Palma), the service rifle category of the National Long Range Championship has been won by 7.62mm rifles exclusively (2007 - Navy Mk2; 2008 - M1A; 2009 - M14; 2010 - M110; 2011 - M110). When the NRA eliminated 600 yards from the long range program, you began to see a separation in the long range aggregate scores between 5.56 and 7.62 rifles. I think I saw some Army shooters with the M110 experimenting as early as 2008. The Army Reserves and National Guard were giving them a good run in 2008 and 2009 with M1A/M14s. But by 2010, the AMU seemed to have the bugs worked out.

Personally, I credit the shooters more than the M110 itself for winning in 2010 and 2011. All three are capable rifles with a good shooter behind them.
