If you were going to buy it today
If you were going to buy it today, would you get a 260 Rem, a 243, or a 22-250? You only have those 3 choices...which one and why?

I'd buy the .260, because I don't have one yet.

.260 Rem. In fact, I plan to have a .243 Model 7 rebarreled in .260. I think the .260 better splits the difference between .223 and .308.

260 because my pops already reloads for it. I love free ammo.

Without knowing what I'm going to use it for, I can't pick one or the other. I don't really impluse buy and ususally have a gun picked out for a particular function before I buy it.

Really depends on what I already have. I already have several 223's so I don't need a 22-250. I have several 308's. Both the 260 and 243 are tempting, but I'd probably go 260 if I had to buy one since the 243 is so close to the 223 in performace. Personally, with what I already own, I'd just pass and save my money. Not that there is a thing wrong with any, I just don't need any of them.

If it's like coyote size and smaller, 22-250 without a shadow of a doubt. A 35gr Nosler BT at 4,435fps is a wonder to behold. It's almost unfair.
If I'm including deer, 260 for sure. Partly because I like to be different, partly because it picks up pretty much where the 243 leaves off, which is at the low end for big game and still low enough for varmints. I don't care much for 243. Don't know why. I guess it just seems like an intermediate, niche cartridge that's realistically too big for my woodchuck hunting and smaller than I would pick for deer. It's entirely adequate for deer, absolutely without a doubt, but it's not the best choice IMO. 260 is perfect for deer, acceptable for woodchucks and coyote. 22-250 is absolutely awesome for anything up to coyote size.

If I could only have one, period, then the .260 would allow me to load down for varmints; the .22-250 would not really let me load up for large, thin-skinned game; the .243 is a nice round, but would still have an upper limit.
Not that the .260 is a powerhouse, but of the three, I'd go with it, as it would offer the most versatility. Now, of those you've listed, if I were going to add to my current collection it would be the .243, as I have nothing in that category. I already have rifles in .30-06 and 7mmRM, so I don't really need a .260 for larger game. And if you asked what I actually think I'll get next, that would be a 6.8SPC upper for my AR. |

I'd buy the .243 because I miss the one I had.

I'd say you're missing nothing except extreme low end and something in 30 cal (ish) if you're interested in something more than 7-08.
A 17HMR and a 338 Lapua, for example. If that were my safe, I'd be missing nothing and I'd have a few extras. Last edited by Brian Pfleuger; November 4, 2011 at 07:44 PM. |

The question about what you're going to shoot with it is important. If the list of shootables included deer, then go with the 260 - but only if you reload. My 260 was bought from a buddy only because it was such a good deal I couldn't say no. I didn't even use it for a couple of years. But...now I use it plenty. It's too much for Coyotes (not that too much is bad), but great for medium to big pigs and it's great on deer. And how much do I like it...I thought you'd never ask. Tomorrow is opening day of deer season and I'm taking the 260 instead of my Sako 270. That'll be the first opening day without the 270 in maybe 25 years. Trust me...that's big. So get the 260.

The .243 because it's easy to reload, has lots of good bullets available for it, it's light and handy and because I have killed deer, elk, antelope, turkey and myriad varmints with it. Whether it's considered marginal by some makes no never mind to me. It works for me and that's good enough.

I am intigued by the 260, it's different. I am a reloader, so I could shoot it for much less that $35 a box.

There's absolutely no doubt that I'd pick the 260 under the conditions that you indicate.
You reload, therefore ammo price is irrelevant. You already have a 22-250 and 243, you do not have a 260. There seems no sense in adding another firearm in a cartridge you already have.

I'm leaning heavily toward the 260. For some reason, I just want one.

Let me get this right, you Live in S.D. Not San Diego but South Dakota?
But you don't own a decent P-Dog gun? .204 Ruger. It will change the way you shoot Varmints from day 1.... Just my 2 cents..

Hands down, .243. It's the most common and most versatile of the 3.
