Can someone explain this to me?

http://www.weaver-mounts.com/mountcharts/default.aspx

Now, I am looking at the first pair of rings for the M77.

What does '40A' mean under the 'extensions' column? Is that a canted ring?

(please oh please god let that be what it is...)

No, it's an extended ring, meaning it extends outward from the base to hold a scope that has the turrets in a spot that might interfere with the ring when the scope is set for the proper eye relief.

I believe that means the ring is extended back toward the shooter in order to allow scopes with less eye-relief to be used. The opposite could be used to allow a scout scope to be mounted more forward. Ruger makes extended rings too.
