Rem 1858 44 manufacturer?
I have a Lyman Rem 1858 in .44 cal.
It was a gift in 1976. Shoots ok, but would like better accuracy. Who does accuracy work? How can I tell the manufacturer? Would like to buy spare cylinders from Cabelas. Any other suppliers recommended? Thanks BodieBill |

Look for a manufacturer's mark corresponding to one of the ones shown in this link:

Rem M1858 spare cylinders
Thanks for the proof mark source.
The proof marks on the Lyman Rem 1858 44 cal cylinder indicate it is Gardone & Brescia (since 1951.) This Lyman revolver is vintage 1976. I want to buy some spare cylinders. Lyman no longer has BP revolvers or parts. They claim that Invest Arms of Italy was the manufacturer. Anyone know how to contact them or find a source for the cylinders? Cabelas has spare cylinders but are for the Pietta revolver--wonder if they will fit the Lyman? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks |

Go back to that site and read it carefully. Gardonne is the Italian proof house. There's two Gardonne stamps on every Italian bp gun. One is the proof house stamp and the other is the bp proof. You want to find the manufacturers mark. There's also a date code.

bodieBill,
You may hafta' give up on that extra cylinder thing. BP cylinders are, and must be, built to the specific specs of the weapon. Since this varies widely between manufacturers, you can't expect a Pietta or Uberti or even an original to fit your revolver. You would need to find one from the same batch as used in 1976, unless you know a really got gunsmith who can custom make one. This is also a safety issue. Perfect fit is manditory for safe operation. New 1858's are affordable, the extra cylinders relitively cheap, and are sold in about every gun shop. This will cost you less than having a custom cylinder done up. I have a 1973 vintage Navy Arms Remmie. I can't find anything for it any more, so it hangs on a peg above the fire place. Every spring in it is repaired, some twice, the hammer hole sleeved and rebored, the trigger sear long ago replaced and rebuilt. I didn't abuse the weapon, I just fired it about every weekend for fifteen years. Were it a new Pietta I could buy the parts right at Cabela's! Harry |

Smokin Gun
The overall length is 2.005". Measured with an RCBS electronic digital caliper. The gap between the front of the cylinder to barrel is 0.007 to 0.008 inches measured with thickness gage. The 0.007" gauge was kinda tight, the 0.008 inch gauge was tight. I have ordered a Pietta Rem 1858 New Model Army .44 cal 5-1/2" bbl from Cabela's with two extra cylinders. Will see if either of these fit the Lyman. What would you have that might be close? BodieBill Orange County CA PS Do you have a good source for a holster for my new 5-1/2" Pietta 1858? Would like a Slim Jim style cross draw for right hand shooter. |

As far as Leather is concerned, I have my rig for my Pietta '58 from bigbadgun56 he's real good & very resonable in prices.
The length of your cylinder is about what a Uberti is, Pietta's are 2.010" if I remember. |
