When hunting in big critter country my back up pistol is a 6 inch .44 Mag. (S&W or Ruger) in a shoulder holster to avoid having it in the way.

When in town its a Snub nose 357 but When out in the mountains its a BFR in 45-70 (to match my 45-70 marlin using the same loads).

Desert Eagle, .44 magnum, bandoleer holster.

A howitzer, or 7 1/2" super redhawk .454. I switch between both. Same holster

In black bear country, .357 with 180 gr Buffalo Bore hard cast, 4" barrel, medium frame.

In grizzly country, .454 Casull, lots of choices in ammo, at least a 5" barrel, large frame.

While hunting big game the only handgun I would consider carrying is a 22 revolver. When the action is slow it's nice to be able to pick off a grouse for the table.

I hunt in an area that is known for it's big black bears and I've never carried a backup handgun. If I can't do it with 7 rounds of 30-30 or 12 rounds of 357 magnum from my carbine I don't see what good a pistol is going to do me. If I hunted in an area where meth labs or marijuana farms were known to be I would be much more likely to carry a handgun or maybe just a bunch extra ammo for the rifle.. . .if I hunted there at all!

However, if I'm not hunting my woods handgun is usually a Smith and Wesson Model 10 or my Ruger Blackhawk in 357 magnum. It all depends on my mood.

"Town gun", or concealed in "civilization" is either the Glock 19 IWB, or the 642 in the pocket.

Woods handgun, Cimarron Model P, 5.5 inch in .45 Colt.

I have a Cimarron Thunderer, 3.5 inch, also in .45 Colt for a back country New York reload, but it is back in Fredericksburg for some warranty work right now. Can't wait to get it back and procure a huckleberry rig for it.

I don't currently hunt, as my schedule/location doesn't allow too well for me to complete the field portion of the Texas hunter safety course. I hope to move fairly soon, and my revised lifestyle should allow for said education.

That being said, I don't feel like I would rush out and buy up a Ruger or a .44 for whilst out away from running water or telegraphy.

.45 Colt in standard pressure, was by all accounts, reasonably formidable from 'round 1873 until 1935. With the advent of the .357 Magnum, it was neutered. We all know Patton used that for his "killing gun" and his .45 SAA was just for show.

In all seriousness, carry what you feel comfortable carrying. If I didn't feel like my rifle or my backup, which will remain the .45 Colt, could handle what I was up agin', I would beat a hasty retreat for my truck, ATV, or whatever else might give me a means of escape, or at least higher ground. Until someone invents a patented guaranteed death ray.

I would rather take a round of 50BMG to the foot than a 22short to the base of the skull. all 26 of my guns are 45/70 govt, 357 mag, 22 or 12 ga... I believe in keeping it simple. Wish my wife did as well...
