Heavy loads for a 35 Remington Bolt action

I would like to load some 225 Grain Sierra Game kings at about 2250-2450 fps. In a modern Interarms Mark X action rifle chambered for 35 Remington. I really don't need the power that reaming it to a Whelen would produce. It has a 24" tube. Someone probably built it for a Wife or Starter rifle. Any ideas as to Max capabilities of the caliber would be appreciated. I feel the action and barrel will allow some heavy bullets to be shot safely at those velocities.

Why not have it reamed out to a .358 Winchester instead? Brass for a .35 Remington is very thin as it was not designed for high pressures and hot-rodding them would probably cause ruptured cases.

There is alot of info on the .35 rem handloads on marlinowners.com but they are all for lower pressure loads but you might be able to figure a way to bump them up alittle more. I would really look into turning it into a .358 if it was me, it shouldnt take much work.

Dean Grennell did some work on hotloading the .35 Remington when it was available in the 600. That was a while back and might be difficult to locate but it is all I can think of in print.

Quickload, a chronograph, and a close eye on fired brass is about the only other option.

I doubt you can make 2250+ fps with a 225 grain bullet and meet the Gibbs criterion of ten loadings per case, though. Maybe with a 200.

With that long tube you might want to try as slow a powder as you can and then load the round as long as you can without hitting the rifling. Your brass is gona be the limiting factor though, as others have said.

IN BOLT ACTION GUNS ONLY 37 grains of RL-7 gives a 200 grain Hornady Spire point almost 2400fps in a 22" barrel with 45,000psi. I have been reloading the .35 Rem for more than 30 years . I used my Oehler strain guage equipped lab on several of my project XP100r and 600s ect. extensively 5 or 6 years ago. Win 748 can give a seated out 200 grain bullet a hundred or 150fps more but I won't tell you how much W748 this 53000psi load takes. 200 grain .35 rem bullets are about optimum. Anything heavier doesn't get up to 2100fps or so because the case capacity is not there for slow powders the heavies like. A .358 strains to bust 2300fps with a 250grainer. Actually a 180 grain spitzer in a .35 Rem is prolly the heat for game up to 400 pounds as you can get 2600fps in a bolt gun.The .35 Rem operates at a SAAMI 37000psi but the case is NOT weak or thin. At least not up to 55,000+ PSI IMHO.

Thanks guys, the fellows at Sierra said it was not going to expand on anything but a hard shoulder shot at my velocities. Oh well the old 200 or 180 fp will have to get the job done for me. Thanks for the input.
