Just wondering if this is normal with 22hornet and 40 gr vmax's the case length is under the max length and if get it under the 1.723 max length they look like this the one on the left is one my dad loaded many many years ago. Should i leave them out some as long as they fit in the clip?

22 Hornet

Bring them out more till the full diameter of the bullet is just above the case mouth. SAAMI lists the COL from 1.723" max to 1.660" minimum as useable. http://www.saami.org/PubResources/CC...2%20Hornet.pdf

40 grain Vmax and Ballistic Tips are a bit too long to seat to max C.O.L. in the Hornet in many rifles.

35 grain V max will work just fine in my Ruger 77/22 Hornet, but the 40's require me to seat the bullet past the start of the ogive, like shown in your pictures, so I don't load them often.

Some bullets will be labeled specific for the Hornet or .218 Bee, and are a shorter bullet than those meant for some of the more powerfull .22 caliber cartridges.

40 Grain Nosler in a hornet

I have shortened a few Hornet cases so when I use the 40 grain Nosler's I don't end up with a round looking like yours.
With Lil'Gun (max load) the better BC of these bullets works well, even if velocity is cut back a bit.
These days I just load them long, almost on the lands and use a single shot loading tray in my CZ527 Hornet.

Neil.

PS: Yes I did realise this was an old thread, but this is a way to use the 40 and 45 grain bullets, and still load from the magazine.
