.9 mm vs. .40 S&W - Page 2

If your main purpose for this handgun purchase is a backup gun for hunting hogs skip both the 9mm and 40 S&W. If you must have a Auto then as already stated above get a Glock 20 in 10mm.

You can't get what your looking for without a little recoil and the Glock 20 is pretty mild compared to some others in the same caliber.

If this were for SD/HD then either the 9 or 40 would be great.

I am not a fan of "Big" recoil like what you see out of full bore loads out of .357mag snuby's but, medium recoil out of larger, heavier auto's is not so bad and I have gotten used to it.

Recoil is primarily a function of the weight of the bullet, the velocity of the load ...and the weight of the gun.

So go with the heaviest gun you like ( like a Sig 226 - especially in an all stainless version ) vs any poly frame gun ...will be a way better option ( with any given cartridge).

In a heavier gun - the recoil of a .40S&W 180gr bullet...isn't mild / but it isn't uncontrollable either...but it depends on what fits your hands the best.

Having recently faced a similar set of criteria I chose the .40 in a Ruger SR40c. What recoil the .40 has is effectively minimized in that pistol. I have the "firepower" and larger bore of the .40 in a very packable package (it may be the perfect packin' pistol). It is also very accurate and eats hard cast LSWC like a fat kid on a bag of M&M's.

IMHO, I wouldn't use either. 10mm in a semi auto platform, .357 in revolver, and I know no one has mentioned it yet, but you could try the rossi ranch hand in .357 or .44 mag. They make a drop leg holster for them that would work.

If you're thinking about a G20 you should also thing about a G21. You can get a conversion kit that converts G21 into a G20. That's like having two guns in one frame.

If you get a G20 I know you can't convert it into .45, but you might be able to convert it into a .40

You can convert the G20 to .40 S&W, .357 Sig and 9x25 Dillon with drop in barrels.

I have not seen a conversion to go to .45 ACP from 10mm tho?

It doesn't exist because it can't. The .45 is a larger diameter round and the hole in the end of the slide isn't large enough for the .45 barrel to go through. You CAN convert a .45 to 10mm though... although oddly, there is no conversion for .40 from .45... for example, you can convert a g20 to .40... but not a g21... which to me is silly, since it's the same size gun...

I always carried my S&W Model 58, 41 magnum as a back up. Sometimes used it as a primary. That or a 44 mag would give you a better safety margin. I think a back up gun, a last resort piece, should have some stopping power.
