converting the cheap #8 bird shot into slugs/buckshot.

i been watching a few of these videos on youtube.

then i wonder why don't they make these cheap slugs shells at the factory? is bird shot way cheaper to produce than a slug of same weight?

Slugs are loaded differently, different powder and the slug weigh's less than a shot charge.

The demand for slugs is way less than regular target/game loads, so the loading factory's are geared to producing those loads first.

The slug loads are on the bottom of the list to do.

After all how many slugs do you shoot in one session?

To some degree, but they're also more inconsistent, prone to breakup while firing, and more difficult to load in large batches, so the lawyers would go crazy the second that anything out of the ordinary would happen. Can you imagine what would happen if someone shooting a round of skeet or trap would get one of these mixed up in their bag? Every range in the country would immediately be shut down because their range template would be too small.

Cajun old buddy, look elsewhere than those wax slugs and cut shells videos for shotgun tips. There is a reason most of us abhor the practice and I will bet since you brought it up the reasons will soon be listed.

1) Volume of ammo sold. The bird shot is sold in MUCH higher volume.

2) Ease of manufacture. Running shot through the tower is easier than swaging slugs where amount by weight is concerned.

3) Ease of manufacture again. It is easier to load a one piece plastic wad, drop a load of shot, and fold crimp on automated equipment than it is to drop a series of cardboard and felt wads, drop in a single slug and roll crimp.

There are extensive videos showing them on youtube with impressive results
