6.5x55 and the ruger M77 MKII

guys i loaded about 2 days ago the horn 140 gr. btsp and used 46.5 gr. of h4831. recoil was about what i thought it was gonna be. but couldnt help notice the 45,000 cup the hodgdon website listed. then went to other cartridge listing with the same bullet, they listed 50,000cup. whats the difference. my brass is constructed the same as there's, my rifle is noted for its strength. really how high can i go? but i dont wanna blow up my rifle. who has modern rifle loads that i can look at?

As long as the gun supports the brass well enough to stop it distorting enough to risk leaking gas or producing other pressure signs or, in the extreme, blowing out, you should be OK. The upper pressure limit set by SAAMI is a manufacturing standard that is intended to make the ammunition safe for all guns chambered for it. It does not take stronger guns into account. It is intended to be safe with the weakest guns that are still in shooting condition.

That said, as pressure increases you wear the gun more rapidly. Scottish Ballistician Geoffry Kolbe says that once any gun gets above around 58,000 psi, throat erosion rates start to increase disproportionately to pressure, so I try to limit myself to that number even in chamberings that are rated for more. If I need more velocity I get a chambering with more room for powder and still run it within that pressure limit if I can. This is about barrel economy, though, and not safety.

Nosler 5&6 take the Swede performance past the 260 Rem. You should be able to get 2750 from 140s in the 22" barrel of your Ruger.

What's a 6.5 in a strong rifle capable of?55-58K CUP?65KPSI? The 264WinMag(?55-58K CUP? 65KPSI?) if one believes the old Hodgdon and Sierra data, may get to 3000fps with a 140 grainer down a 24-26" tube. Got a chrono?

Nosler 6 listed both IMR and Hodgdon, but not the SC persuasion. You might consider IMR or RL-19 with the expansion ratio of the Swede. The Nosler 6 listed the same velocity (2743) with IMR4831 as the H4831 with 4 grains less powder under their 140 Partition. My 260 loves RL19.

Reloading manuals and ammunition makers have to assume that someone is going to stick their reloads/ammunition in a Swedish M1894/96 or Norwegian Krag.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of these old rifles in the US. People confuse the fine metal work with advanced metullurgy or good gas protection, which neither of these rifles have.

Your Ruger is at least 25% to 50% stronger than these relics and Rugers have an excellent reputation for shooter protection.

Therefore you can load your Ruger at levels that are risky for these older actions.
