OAL .40S&W 155 Gr LRN
I picked up some 155 grain lead round nose bullets. If I seat them to 1.135 , there is quite a bit of the shoulder still above the case. My Lyman manual lists a OAL for a cast 150 grain ( # 40164 ) as 1.090 . If I go with that the shoulder is right at the case. I just am always worried about overpressure on the 40 if i seat to deep. Any suggestions? FYI I am using 5.5 Grains Unique , shooting a Sigma.

I was shooting 180 grian data with the 155 swc and you will get about 950fps and reliable function within safe pressure as long as you seat with the shoulder just in front of the case mouth. Any longer and the ammo won't go into batttery.

Keep in mind that the bullet used in the Lyman manual is a different shape than the bullet you are using, so the OAL will be different. The OAL given for each bullet will only apply if you are using that exact bullet.
I shoot a lot of 155 gr bullets, but mine are also a different shape. I seat mine so the OAL is 1.115. It took a bit of experimenting to get to that. I started seating them a bit longer, but if they are too long, they will hang up in the magazine. So I just kept easing them in little by little until they no longer hang up. I have shot close to 3,000 of these with no problems other than other shooters make fun of my "Crayola Crayon" bullets(see picture). I load real wimpy loads with little recoil all the way up to full power loads and they shoot great. Here's a pic of what mine look like(not the greatest photo but you'll get the idea). Again, different shape than yours, so OAL will be different. |

1.115 to 1.125 sounds about right. I use 1.125, but do not use cast bullets only jacketed.
