I use IMR-4198 for 7.62x39 only, it is a faster burning powder than H-335 or other powders use in 223. There are loads from Hodgdon for the 223 but it will not use enough of the case space to give good results. With most reloads you want your powder to fill the case 90% or better.
The powder is recommended for smaller size cases like the 222 Remington or the 221 Fireball or a 45-70 rifle. There is a ton of better powders for the 223, I would recommend H-335, IMR-8208 XBR or H-4895. Jim

I have since the 80's
It's been reformulated recently but still shoots the same. made in Australia 22 Grains IMR 4198 any brass same make I used New Lapua, Nosler, Lake City 09, Hornady, it did not matter they all shot good. any primer 52 Grain Hornady match or Sierra match 52's No better powder in the .223 in my mind for 40-55 grain bullets. Especially accurate in the AR-15's burns clean. 1/2" or better in my AR-15 or .223 Bolt @ 100 yards all day long..

It's a fast burning powder and works well for short-barreled rifles. I use it in my 20" barreled .308 Scout Rifle.

I don't use in my .223 but do use it in my 45/70 with a 350 gr FN.

I use both 4198s in my old 222. 20.0 grains with a 50 grain bullet of either will shoot one hole groups off the bags.

That's strange since 25 grains of H335 will only do 85% of case volume. A max load for IMR 4198 for that bullet is "20.4" grains for the 55 gr. Sfire and "20.4 grains" for the 55 gr. SPR SP. After the gunpowder settles in the case I would guess about 65% of case by volume. This if from the Hodgdon's 2011 Annual Manual for Reloading. Jim Quote:

I tried it for my Howa 1500 Varminter .223 and a 60 gr. bullet, but could never find a load that performed as well as H322 does, so I'm using what I have left for my AK-47 (Saiga) loads. I tried it after reading several threads that recommended it as a target powder, but alas...

Edit to add info. Nosler #6 lists load density with each powder charge. In the 223 section, 22gr of IMR 4198 has a Load density of 91% with 50/52gr bullets. QuickLoad lists 22gr of IMR 4198 as 100% with 55gr Hornady FMJ. Last edited by steve4102; June 19, 2011 at 11:51 PM. |

I just loaded a bunch of 223's using 4198. The max charge of 20 grains gets it up toward the case neck but isn't a compressed charge like 4895 is at 26gr.
