Night time: Do you keep one in the pipe?
For some of us carrying conditions change depending on the circumstances. I would like know how many of you keep one in the pipe in your night stand gun?

Any gun that I think I might need (such as one devoted to a defensive purpose) has one in the pipe.

Assuming by locked, you mean a trigger lock, no I don't. If its locked in the 1911/BHP sense, yes, I keep them cocked and locked(thumb safety up) with one in the chamber. Any other revolver or semi auto I might use would be full loaded, with a round chambered and in the appropriate safety condition.
I can't see the value in not having a round chambered and ready to go. Also I think having a trigger lock on your primary defense pistol, that you may need to save your life, unexpectedly in the middle of the night, is just plain silly.

If you keep the weapon in a good holster (i.e. your carry rig), you should have no issues keeping the weapon ready to go.

Wasn't there a story about keeping a loaded gun near the bed and the phone ringing late at night and the sleepy guy put the gun to his head instead of the phone and.... well you know

Communications - port side. Weapons - starboard side.

Nope.
I rarely keep one in the chamber over night. I do carry condition 1 during the day, but when I take the gun off my person, I clear the chamber and re-insert the mag. If I am alerted enough to go for the gun, I am alert enough to rack the slide. |

You don't have an option for me.
I picked "Yep, and unlocked." but, since it's a Glock, it's really "Unlocked and Half-Cocked" It's also in a Gunvault so safety is not really the issue.

The pistol has a round chambered but the shotgun doesn't.

Nope... I don't think the three femto-seconds it will take me to chamber a round will be the deciding factor.

Pour moi, it's the shotgun by the bed, chamber empty. I'd rather be sure I'm awake enough to roll out of bed, grab it, rack it, and figure out who or what made that bump in the night -- I don't want to be firing it half-asleep and find out I just shot my dog... |

Magazine in, safety off, chamber empty. If the situation is so periless that I haven't got time to recognize the situation and rack the slide I will more than likely already be a victim. I have 3 dogs in the house and one has a sense of hearing that simply amazes me. It can hear someone walking up the driveway and goes into alert. Once she goes into alert in the middle of the night I will grab my pistol and be ready for whatever action is necessary.
My personal choice is I would rather have that extra split second to rack the slide and become fully aware than pull the pistol and maybe shoot someone inadvertantly. I am not suggesting anyone do what I do but that is my choice. |

Not as much of a potential issue for me. My nightstand gun is my old S&W 4586.

For CCW, sure, one in the pipe.
For nightstand, no, I don't want to end up like the guy who answered his Glock instead of the phone. Nightstand gun (M&P45) is loaded but not chambered, and sits in a holster that carries one extra mag and a flashlight. |

Yep, I usually have more than one loaded and at the ready. I do not normally keep it within reach of the bed, though, so when the dogs start barking I can get up, shake the fuzzies off, and investigate if need be.

My defensive guns are always ready to go, round chambered! If children were around it would be different. We don't allow kids in the house.

Nope...racking the slide gives my hands something to do while my brain wakes up...

My carry is DAO and is always carried with one chambered....just as my revolvers were carried.
As for bedside...phone is on wifey's side...business communication is on my side. Mark.
