st louis hawken
I was looking for a hawken to add to my collection and found a pretty good deal on one. After reading some on the web a few people are saying they will blow up. Cva web site really talks more about the in-line guns, is this cva hawken safe to shoot or not. What is the best bang for your buck when looking for a percussion hawken rifle? The rifle im looking at is a cva 463 hawken.

CVA is a good rifle. Weren't the 'hawken' styles called Mountain Rifle and not 'Hawken'? I'm getting forgetful in my old age.
The TC 'Hawkens' aren't bad either. The Lyman Great Plains Rifle has a lot of current popularity but I have no hands on experience with them. |

CVA Hawken is an awesome rifle. And very affordable still.
The CVA Mountain Rifle however has been selling for $300+ depending on caliber. I had a 54 and 58 big bore mtn rifle a couple years ago and regret selling that set up.

They're able to take a lot of abuse and such used guns are rarely ever unsafe. Once in a while someone may short start a load which can ring the barrel or create a bulge in it. One way to tell is to run a tight patch up & down the bore and feel for a loose or uneven spot. One of the best Hawken deals for the buck right now is the Traditions Hawken Woodsman that has a nickeled barrel and a laminated stock for $284 on sale directly from Traditions. And Traditions muzzle loaders have a limited lifetime mechanical warranty. Look ----> http://www.traditionsfirearms.com/pr...c50ca2cfc5582f Last edited by arcticap; January 18, 2011 at 04:09 AM. |

Are you talking about an authentic copy of an actual J&S Hawken or an TC or CVA?
True Hawkens look a bit different then the ones that are just called Hawkens. |

Very nice guns Wyosmith. The first one is a lil ornate and the Gemmer sights don't go on a J&S. Just sayin. I only have the one and it's not as nice but was blueprinted from an original.

Here's some photos of a CVA .50 Hawken that appeared to be in "new & unfired" condition. The serial number indicated that it was made in 1991.

You are correct Hawg. Gimmer sights would only go on a late S Hawken, but go back and look. The rifle they are on is a copy of an "S." Not a "J.&S."
So the sight is ok on that rifle. |
