Looking at a used Blackhawk Convertible .357/9mm
Been looking for a .357 to take camping/4-wheeling at the river and what-not. I've owned a couple of DA/SA ones before (GP100, SP101, S&W60) and was really looking for a good used SP101 again but can't find one local. (don't want to buy online cause I'd like to check it out first)
Anyways, yesterday I did come across a Blackhawk .357/9mm and kinda liked it. I've have .22lr SAO revolvers before but never a centerfire. The .357 cylinder looked like it'd been shot quite a bit but the 9mm didn't show any sign of use. Both cylinders did lockup nice and tight and didn't seem to have any problems. The only reason I'm considering this is that I'm a huge 9mm fan as well and all my handguns but one .22lr is 9mm. Anything I should know about these things before I go try to negotiate price? (It's a blued 4 5/8" and they have $495 on it) |

Dual caliber Ruger in nice condition for $495? Dicker down as much as you can and buy it.
Won't dicker? Buy it anyway. |

Good gun. bank vault tough and Ruger still services them. Parts are easy to get from Midway, Brownells, etc.
My first was a 357 Blackhawk, second hand also , didn't have that 9mm cylinder, that would have been a nice feature to have. Get it, nice shooter. Bring cash when you dicker, tell them I got $350 cash and see, sometimes cash will get you the deal. Don't let them know you got more in your other pocket. Gary |

Ruger does more than still service them. They still make them. Great guns.

Check with LGS , you can prolly get a new production one for $550 or less.
Don't pay anywhere near $500 for a used one.

Unless it's a pre 1972 "3 Screw" model then $500 is a deal.

I too am a 9mm fanatic, with only one pistol in .22 LR and no other caliber of pistol. I'm on to my first revolver too, also in 9mm: a 986. Personally, I just like to shoot my guns a lot, so 9mm hurts the wallet less. I shoot 9mm far more than .22 LR at this point in my life, especially with the continued .22 LR shortage.
I'd say a Ruger convertible from .357 to 9mm is an awesome choice. |

MSRP on the new ones is $672 I think. They are the new smaller ones which may be good or bad to you. I have an older one, 4.62 inch and it is a little better with 357 than 9mm. Still I love the guy.

Stopped in two FFL's today looking at those myself. One place had several 357/9mm for $509 New (both barrel lengths), the other place had one new one in stock for $535, short barrel version.

I MOST DEFINATELY would ask to shoot it and would test that 9MM cylinder first. SOME of those 9MM cylinders did NOT shoot for sour apples. And some were tackdrivers !

I would just buy a new one, especially if one cylinder of this used one shows a lot of use. You can probably get a new one for less than $550. I'd offer $400 tops for the used one.

Killimanjaro post number 2 said it for me...I'd do the deal. If it's a store and they won't come off the $495 ask for a couple boxes of ammo. If they won't do it, buy it anyway.
Wil Terry had a valid point about some of the 9mm cylinders but I'd take a chance on it anyway. |

Bud's has them new for $514 shipped right now. Ive seen them elsewhere for $499 shipped on occasion. $495 is steep for a used one IMO.

I have one and love it. Its my best all around revolver. I paid $400 about a year and a half ago. I would barter a bit.
Good luck Howard |
