redfield range finder

I have a 4x12redfield with some type of rangefinder in it
does anybody know how this thing works?
if i turn the magnification from 4 to 12 a scale of
distance from 1oo to 600 yds moves.

The rangefinder is for deer sized targets. Zoom scope til the 2 parrel lines (not the cross hairs) are equal to the body size of a deer.Then read the bottom number in yards.
