Ammo for Garand?

Does anyone know of a reliable source for ammo suitable for firing in a CMP Garand?

The CMP's ammo looks kinda funky and I'd like something suitable for sporting.

thanx

The CMP ammo should be fine. The important thing is to get ammo made for the Garand. Not just 30-06 ammo in Garand clips. Standard 30-06 hunting ammo can cause damage to a Garand.

CMP Ammo

I cant address hunting ammo for use in the Garand, though i think a search of this or the CMP forums will yield info on that. As far as the spam can CMP ammo i've bought probably 2500 rounds of it and virtually all of it has functioned perfectly. None of it has looked like the ammo horror pictures they post on their site. I was fortunate to buy mine when it was still available in the en bloc clips...the clips are getting expensive now if you buy them elsewhere.

Ammo from the CMP would be ideal, Greek M2 Ball.

If I have my information correct you want 30-06 ammo that is 2,700 fps or under. IMR-4895 or IMR-4064 powder is preferable. Most commercial grade 30-06 is slower burning and can cause damage to the op rod if used to much. That said my Garand is quite fond of the .30 M1 (made especially to be used with an M1 Garand) ammo made by Federal, its a little pricy but good to have when I have no surplus 30-06 at hand.

Great ammo. That and the Lake City is fantastic ammo.

Have you checked with ammoman.com, or cheaperthandirt? Both have had some surplus 30-06 that looked pretty good.

If you want soft point sporting ammo, you have problems because most sporting ammo is not loaded with USGI spec powders.
Much of the sporting ammo will be loaded with powders with a different burn rate that can seriously damage an M1.

You can get on the CMP forum, where there's info on the sporting ammo that is suitable for the M1.

Other than that, you have choices:

1. Reload your own ammo with sporting bullets and USGI spec powder.

2. Pull the bullets from USGI spec ammo and seat a sporting bullet OF THE EXACT SAME WEIGHT.

3. Buy a Schuster gas nut.
This is a special vented adjustable replacement for the gas cylinder lock nut.
You can adjust it to allow shooting of most 30-06 ammo.
You can buy the Schuster nut from Brownell's and Midway.

Also note that some M1's have problems feeding some soft point sporting ammo.
You may have to do some experimenting to find a bullet that will feed reliably in your specific M1.

While most commercial .30-06 ammo shouldn't be fired in an unmodified Garand, both Federal and Hornady now make ammo specifically for use in Garands.
