dented .223 brass

how bad does a dent have to be to discard the case?

If the side's truly "caved in" then toss. But normal "creases" and such are pretty normal and iron themselves out in either sizing and/or the next firing.

No big deal.

My rule is, if there is anything you could call a corner, throw it out, but a smooth dent is fine.

Are you looking at brass that has been damaged via an ejection port on a semi auto rifle? Some of those dents can be pretty nasty. If it appears to have a really sharp crease toss it. Run a few through the FL sizing die and see how much of the dent is removed. Like dacur said, a smooth dent is fine, sharp corners are a high probability rupture point.

The rule is, when in doubt toss it out.

I basically keep what the sizing die will get out, which is most. I reject the larger crease dents from ejection and the ones which affect more than 10% of the surface.

Also, I reject most head damage as it hurts feed reliability. It can also be a sign of over pressure causing an ejector imprint, etc.

If the dent prevents you getting a full powder charge in the case it's probably too big...

I'm with the others. Dents are okay. Creases and deep scratches, not so much.
