Ammo Advice --> Sig Classic .22

Hello everyone,

I'm seriously considering a .22 for my next pistol, and as I already have a SIG P220 elite stainless, I want a classic .22 P226 or P229, preferably in the E2 grip flavor. I was initially going to get a Buckmark, but my point in purchasing the .22 is to improve my abilities with my more serviceable calibers. I have two questions:

- Is there a performance difference, other than sigh radius, between the P226 and P229? I would imagine that the 229 may work better, as the slide is shorter, and therefore will cycle easier.

- What ammo have you had the best luck with? What hasn't worked? Is some kind cleaner than others? Keep in mind the ammo is only for range plinking use. My local range is only 25 yards max, if that matters.

Thanks.

A lot of bulk .22 doesn't cycle semiautos very well, they're just not hot enough.

I use CCI mini-mags in all my .22 pistols, it works consistently and reliably. Worth the extra money, as far as I'm concerned

I've shot mostly minimags through mine. I've used some bulk pack(federal and win), but it was at the end of life of the recoil spring, so I don't know if it would cycle well on a fresh recoil spring or not.

Thanks guys. What's the cost differential between CCI minimags and bulk?

Wally world is selling plastic ammo cans of CCI Mini Mag .22LR 1600 rounds for $99. So you can now get a little better pricing on the mini mag, and you buying in bulk, and get a $5 Plano ammo can out of the deal, (not a big deal,..).

They just started selling it, in this packaging, at the end of last month, in my area. Ive been paying around $25 for Federal bulk packs, count is 525 I think. Id steer clear of the Remington bulk packs, Ive bought some real garbage recently. Wont hardly cycle a 10/22. Ive also been buying some Winchester bulk packs, and them seem ok, but I like the mini mags best.

Thanks Farm Hand. I'm from NJ where Wally doesn't even sell ammo. I'll go to the one in NY state and stock up. that's a great deal on the ammo.

Are these the "coated/jacketed" mini-mags are "un-coated/un-jacketed"? If they are the coated, I'm going to do my best to find these at my local store!

Cost difference is,,,

At my local Wal Mart:

CCI Mini Mags are $6.77 for a 100 round box,,,
That equals 6.8 cents a round.

Federal Bulk Pack is now $19.95 for a 550 round pack,,,
That equals 3.6 cents a round.

Ive been buying both federal and the CCI mini-mags whenever I find them, and it appears to be getting harder by the day... "act now, supplies are running out"

They are copper plated round nose 40 grain bullets.

I have had pretty good luck with the small game loads Federal makes. Runs about $7.00 a tray of 100 rounds just like the minimags.

So, I was finally able to get my hands on a SIG P229 classic .22.

As .22LR is nearly impossible to find, I jumped on a deal from Midway for Remington Subsonic 38 Grain Lead HP. Do you think this ammo has enough power to cycle the SIG?

Figured . . .

Guess I'll have to find a 10/22 or a Henry .22 to use up this ammo

Try it and see how it goes. Though, always a good excuse to get a .22 rifle

My SIG P226-22 Classic loves hot ammo and hates Remington bulk.

A recoil spring change might make it reliable with SV ammo, don't know.
