8 shot revolvers

I think it would be fun to have an 8 shot .357/.38 for plinking, does anyone have any suggestions or don't gets?

Do you have a price range?

If not, the Smith & Wesson M&P R8 .357 Mag is the cream of the crop, but it'd be hard to justify the price, just to go plinking.

I have been looking at the s&w 627 pro series and the taurus 608 4" but am just speculating at this point so I haven't given price any thought yet.

When I was shooting 125-grain magnums out of my GP-100, I was always amazed that my gun held 6 of them.

The Taurus 608 is a very good revolver. They are remarkably strong and i see them shoot pins year in and year out without problems.

Bear in mind that a Bowling Pin load ranges between 180gr and 230gr in 357mag. Thats really heavy.

I loved my Taurus 608. I'm sorry that I ever sold that gun.

To my knowledge, S&W and Taurus are the only two companies which make an eight-shot revolver in .357 Magnum or .38 Special. Nearly every other common revolver with a cylinder that holds more than eight shots are chambered for smaller cartridges. Ruger makes their Blackhawk with an eight-shot cylinder in .327 Federal Magnum and revolvers with eight, nine, and even ten-shot cylinders in .22 Long Rifle have been fairly common for decades.

The 8 shot .357 revolver has been around since 1997 when Smith and Wesson introduced the 627 from the performance center. It has a five inch barrel and is really a great gun in my opinion. I've got two of them (from 1997) and they're just a blast to shoot. The moonclips keep you shooting with little wasted time but you do not need them if you prefer the standard way of loading. They even have speedloaders now for these guns. There have been other 8 shots of course in different barrel lengths, like the 627Pro and the snubby that available.

I paid about $800 for each PC gun, used.

You can still find decent Taurus 608's for around $400. They are decent shooters.

With all the horror stories I don't know if I would be comfortable with getting a Taurus, I will probably just save up and get a S&W 627 pro series, can't go wrong with Smith.

I think it's closer to the mid-80s, if I recall correctly.

The R8 has holes on the top to mount a scope rail that comes with the gun, and a picatinny rail on the bottom barrel for a light, laser, or both.

My 627 V-comp 5", and R8 5". Both great shooting guns. If you want to plink, the R8 scope option sounds like the way to go to me.

The 627 Pro comes moonclip-ready and also has a spring-loaded front sight for quick tool-less sight changes (Note the HiViz instead of the OEM OR.). I also like the Jerry Miculek style grips in place of the OEM Hogue rubber. Also shown is a 2 5/8" PC627 UDR - the remake of the 'Blood Work' gun. It has aftermarket S&W grips on it, too. Out of the box, the Pro's trigger was good - the UDR's was even better.

Note the loaded moonclip - and machined Al speedloaders. The former are from Ranch Products; the latter, from 5starfirearms.com. Both are great products at fair prices. The 627 Pro has a street price locally in the $800's - the UDR is ~$75-$100 more. Both are keepers.

I love my S&W 327PC, but it's hardly a plinking gun.

Shown with .357 mag rounds, but I shoot .38 Short Colt reloads for Steel Challenge.

Smiths are VERY nice, I just will add this about the Taurus. I had shot around 500 rounds out of it before i traded it for a .44 mag revolver. In that time I shot all sorts of loads with it, from the federal .38 special rounds to the Double Tap and Buffalo Bore heavy loads. These are the two loads I used from buffalo bore.

http://www.buffalobore.com/index.php...t_detail&p=103

Because of the porting on the revolver, the worst thing about shooting these rounds was the noise. Even the recoil wasn't that bad in my opinion. While I cannot vouch for The Smith and Wesson 627, I can vouch for the 629 I owned. Smith makes a fine revolver. In SA mode however, the Taurus did better than I thought it might when comparing it to the smith. The trigger wasn't quite as good, but from a bargain revolver, it exceeded my expectations indefinitely.

I hear that Tauruses can be hit or miss, if that is the case, than my 4" 608 was a homerun. Hope this helps!

I hate to try defend a Taurus, but my 608 never missed a beat, 3000k factory mags mostly Rems.

Everybody loved that gun, but I just had to get a Smith for 3Xs more, it works just as good, but, it's a Smith.

Dear Ruger,

Please build an 8 shot 357 on the RedHawk frame with an unfluted cylinder please.

That would be one gun ill buy immediately should it become available. Bowling Pin Shooters would buy them by the ton.

Me and countless other shooters would want one. I know i would want one in blue as well as stainless.

The Smith and Wesson 8 shot revolver .357 was first introduced in 1997. It was the 627PC. The 627 model of 1989 came out but was six shot only. Taurus apparently brought out the 608 the year before the 627pc came out.

I was pretty sure they came out with an 8 shot before 1997. I could be wrong, I just recall seeing one in a magazine before that, and I wanted one ever since. Now I have two.

Thank you Bolty,

I am of the opinion that the world needs an 8 shot 357 made by Ruger. I really hope they make it.

Thank you a thousand times.

I'll buy one, I'm thinking of dumping the 627 V-Comp to pay for it. I never needed that SOB except for bragging rights.

I need that info too.

You just sold me on the 8 shot 5 star speed loader, just ordered it.

Didn't really need it, they (327, 627) both take moon clips, but I won enough money at Keno this week!
