Sweet indeed. Since I picked it up Wednesday, I've had this uncontrollable urge to squint and say things like "We're not just going to let you walk out of here." and "Smith and Wesson and me."

Sounds like a .455 Mark II hand ejector 2nd model.
Made for English and Canadian forces between 1915 and 1917
As for worth, only a collector can answer that, but you can find them listed for as much as $1300, but they are not selling for that.

Alright, my turn:
I picked up a Model 36 tonight. On the bottom of the grip it has 98J3XX. On what I would call the crane, it has another number, 626XX.
Should these numbers be the same?

It is post 1983. The serial number is the number on the butt of the pistol. The numbers on the yoke/crane were probably assembley numbers.

You sure? It def. has a pinned bbl. I thought those went out in 1980.

Pinned barrel eliminated in 1982. Is the J prefix in the serial number in the correct position. I may not be translating the SCS&W correctly.

Then I am stumped. Based on the information I have available to me, I can not give you an accurate date. An option would be to get your pistol factory lettered, but that comes at a charge of $50. There is a disclaimer that says the listed serial dates are considered accurate to within one year, so you may have one of the last pinned barrel pistols. Someone may have an earlier edition of the SCS&W and it may have a more accurate date listed.

SN 98J3XX is 1971/72. That time period is known for the floating "J".

tackdriver, it's from 1971-1972.

onebadscrambler, it's the "floating J" series. Check 1971 under the J Serial Prefix paragraph. I had the same problem.

The serial does correspond with the period of the "Floating J"
It almost always gives us trouble because there seems no rhyme or reason for the placement of the J in the sequences.

hawkeye86 - That's not the SN, or at least not a complete SN. Model 10-8s were made from 1977 to 1988. In the early part of that period, the SN be a 7-digit alphanumeric with a "K" in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th position. Later on, it would be three alpha characters followed by 4 numeric. It should appear inside the frame cutout, but definitely will be on the butt of the gun.

As FlyFish stated, take SN from bottom of grip butt. See pic.
And it would be a "D" rather than "K" for an earlier model 10-8.

Which years were the 17-3 K22s made? I don't need to know the exact date of mine because I am sending for a letter from Roy soon. I am hoping that it turns out to be exactly what I think it is and is factory nickeled.

1967 to 1977.

1981.
Model 10's are carbon steel with either a blue or nickel finish. Model 64's are the same gun in stainless steel.

I have a Smith 28-2. has S2893xx on it. Can anyone tell me the year? My first Smith revolver. Wish it was in better shape but at least I can shoot it.

That's not the serial number or complete serial number. Look at the picture 7 posts above yours. That is where the serial number is located (underside of grip butt). It will have a "S" or "N" prefix or if a later model then a 3 letter prefix.
