Drop your ramrod down your known empty bbl and mark it.
After you've established your fav. load, load your m/l'er then put your ramrod down the bbl. As always, keeping your head away from muzzle, mark your ramrod. This mark will help to insure you a proper load in the future. I.E.: no double charges, boolit seated correctly etc.

This is basic but no one has said it yet

Don't push the ram rod with the palm of your hand, hold it like a soda bottle or a piece of rope. That way if there is a mishap the rod won't wind up going through the palm of your hand.

The most obvious one of all, I would think, but one I've seen violated again and again...

When shooting your muzzleloader from the bench, NEVER load from a 1 pound can of black powder and leave it open on the bench while you shoot.

Putting powder on top of the ball doesn't work nearly as well as putting it under the ball.
Depends on whether you are shooting up or down..

Don't blow down the barrel or if you must blow, use a flexible blow tube. You don't want a mouthful of sparks or worse, a mouthful of blast.
