Savage 110 - 308 or 30/06?

that is the question. do I get the 06 for its 220 grain bullet and large game smashing power or go with the 308 for its much better blasting ammo avaiability?

It depends upon your intended use. I would take the .308.

There are no game species in PA that require a 220 grain bullet. There are suitable loads in 308 Win for every situation you will encounter there. The 308 Win has moderately lower recoil and is more accurate. It is available in a short-action, which is lighter.

I just bought a 110 in .30-06 as a Christmas present to myself. Very nice. I got .30-06 simply because every store in my neck of the woods always has a box available.

They are close, .308 more accurate, short action. Hornady light magnum ammo for .308 closes the power gap which is marginal anyway. I would never go 30-06 over the .308

Until you load the '06 w/light magnum, too.

Not a _lot_ of difference, (but I prefer the '06 myself).

My 110FP is in .308, and is superbly accurate. The question is a good one, here's my .02;

The 110 is a long action. In .308 you have about an inch of extra bolt throw. Where the extra space in the magazine would be is stock material. I am not familiar with any problems related to this.

Where this may become an issue for you is the idea of changing your rifle's caliber. Midway sells kits to swap the barrels on the 110 series to different calibers with the same cartridge head dimensions. For example, a 30/06 can become a .35 Whelen, or a 22-250 in short order with a few tools. .308 can become .243, or 358 Win, etc. It's an idea.

Ammo for the .308 is readily available at low cost, like 30/06 used to be. (Now someone will come up with an old lot of 30/06). As a reloader, this isn't an issue for me so I am not up to date on it.

I personaly think the .308 has more then enough power for anything in PA. I think it all depends on what you want. The first thing I would decied was weather I wanted Long or Short action. Either would pretty much narrow your choice down to one. I had this same disscussion with my old man about a month ago. He wanted with a little more power then his cowboy 30/30 even though he dropped a black bear with it 2 yrs ago. He tried out my .243 Savage 110 and decied big time on bolt action but also decieded he wanted a drop mag. So that pretty much lent it self to the -06.

If you're not a handloader, go with the .308 over the '06.

If your interest in a rifle is for one with a barrel around 22", go with the .308.

If you like long barrels--and best a 26"--and you handload, you can get better performance from the '06. "Better", however is no more than some 10%. For hunting in country where most shots are inside of 300 yards, 10% isn't worth worrying about.
