shortened buffer tube?

since the 9mm round is obviously less in length than .223, can you use a shorter buffer tube? I am not talking about what's the shortest you can purchase, but the shortest I could craft. how long would it need to be? just long enough to let the bolt back the 1.5"-ish to clear the 9mm round? I am building a 9mm ar pistol and am just tossing ideas around in my head. buffer tubes are cheap enough where trial and error wouldn't be too pricey, just curious if I am way off track, or if this is possible. or will other issues come in to play that I am not thinking about?

You would just have to experiment a little at a time to see haw short you can go and still function . I'm curious too as I may build one next.
