Considering a 6.8 upper for my 5.56
I'm not saying my 5.56 isn't enough for hog hunting....but. I'm strongly considering a 6.8 upper for my M&P15 VTAC, as opposed to going with a bolt action. Anyone done this? If so, share you pro's and con's.

300 AAC Blackout would make a better 0 - 300 yard gun.

I built a complete 6.8 rifle. The upper was from PSA. Best price for one. I waited 6 weeks to get one. Second challenge is getting a complete BCG. I went with a couple of different options. I bought a complete 6.8 BCG from M&A until a Daniel Defense became available.

I use a colt ar in 5.56 for work. shot a buddy's 6.8 and the differance is night and day. To me the 6.8 shot softer and it held a 1" 100 yrd group with ease. I can't even come close to that with the colt.

I was checking out Bison Armory uppers - their barrels have a 1:7 twist. So without doing reloads of their 200 grain bullets, does anyone else make a round heavy enough applicable?

Nathan,
I'm not fully up to speed with the 300 AAC Blackout yet? Is ammo readily available? |

^Ammo is mostly available online for now, but few LGS have them in stock.
If you go with 300BLK you will have better interchangeability with AR parts than the 6.8 which is a big advantage IMO. If you just want the better ballistics, then go with 6.8 |

The 6.8 out performs the 300 BLK at all distances
I went with the 6.8 Great round for Piggies Look at Hornady SST 120

It looks like Magpul will have 6.8mm magazines available in the near future?

I found out that all of my LGS's carry 300 Blackout rounds, and no one carries 6.8mm. Same mags...hmmm. Now I'm considering the Blackout.

The 6.8 is a buy on the internet, or a reload at this point
I reload. It uses the lighter 270 rounds. 80 to 130 grain There does seem to be a decent growth of the 6.8, and there are some ammo mnaufacturers coming out with cheap ammo, so what you see today isnt what I believe that you will see in the future To me, the performance is the key. The 300 BLK seems to act more like a 7.62x39, but will do the job

I think either will be good for my purpose here. The 6.8 definitely seems to have better ballistics. Locally I could pick up a 300 blackout Noveske or AAC upper... as well as the ammo. Decisions, decisions?

Good to Go Ammo in Texas has a great 6.8 bullet in SSA brass for around .75 apiece for plinking.
The hunting round of 120 grain SST from Hornady is a tremendouse stopper at around 1.10 per round If you dont wish to reload, there are plenty of people that would buy your once fired brass on 6.8 at .40 cents apiece. (me included) They will pay shipping So, you could end up shooting the better 6.8 at a net price of .35 for plinking ammo and .60 for hunting ammo The 300 BLK is nice, but it doesnt come close enough to the 6.8 IMHO For shots to 200 yards both would be effective. (the 300BLK drops away much faster past 150 yards than the 6.8) I do think the 300blk beats the 6.8 if you run suppressed, but there are vendors like Bison Armory that are out with 6.8 subsonic uppers This is a good, fair dialog on the topic, both pro and con: http://68forums.com/forums/showthrea...lackout-vs-6.8 Good luck on your choices

dean1818,
Are you hunting with your 6.8? And what's the twist of your barrel? |

For me, the biggest issue with the 300 or the 6.8 is the ammo cost. The ammo is out there. I think all three will do well for a while. The 300 is alot like the 7/62 x 39, but I would say that round is superb if someone made an AK worth a damn! AR's won't feed it, so now we have 300 Blackout.
If you were going to shoot pigs silenced, the 300 would really show it came to play! |

I bought the rifle to hunt Texas pigs with about 4 weeks go after seeing all the kills on 6.8 forum.
Havent been out to hunt with it. But love shooting it so far. I have a 8mm mauser that I have used for a few years, which knocks the pigs down. I just wanted something lighter. In an AR format. Call Ben at Bison Armory. He will set you up. He built mine and 2 of my friends

Is it possible to post a pic(s) of your Bison upper?
I spent some time on there site last evening - definitely in my price range. I've found a few Noveske's, but all in the $1,000-$1,500 range. |

300 BLK UMC is $10.36 per box of 20. That is cheaper than any 30-30, and 6.8 is 40% more expensive.
This is 300 BLK at 300 yards - 20 inches of penetration and full expansion from a 9 inch barrel! So at 300 yards, you can expect it to make a 50 caliber hole completely through a deer even when using a 9 inch barrel. Does 6.8 have longer range? Sure - especially if you use the 120 grain SST bullet. But it seems most 6.8 people love the Barnes 85 TSX, and that is 685 ft-lbs at 300 yards as loaded by Silver State Armory. Remington 125 grain 300 BLK ammunition is 690 ft-lbs at 300 yards, and the Barnes 300 BLK 110 grain in the photo above is 615 ft-lbs at 300. Just sayin' - will the deer feel the difference? And 6.8 uses about 45% more powder - which ends up as noise/recoil/blast, more expensive reloading from the powder, and the brass is 2-3x the price. Also 30 caliber bullets are so common that they are actually cheaper than 22 caliber bullets in some cases (pulled bullets, for example). |
