help! how old is my s&w?
I just got a S&W six shooter passed down to me that belonged to my great-grandpa, so I know it's pretty old, I am just curious if anybody can help me put a year on it. It is a 38 S&W CTG serial number V301xxx.
Thanks! |

The V prefix indicates that your gun is a "Victory Model," manufactured during WWII and issued to US and other allied troops.
The S&W forum at www.smith-wessonforum.com is a good place to find such information. They have a FAQ section that I believe includes serial numbers. Anyone who is even remotely interested in S&W revolvers (or autos, for that matter) should have a copy of the Standard Catalog of Smith&Wesson, 3rd Edition. I found my copy at Barnes and Noble.
