gun auction sunday need advice

im going to a auction sunday and these are the guns they are selling by the pics they all look in good to perfect condition. ill be honest i dont know the value of alot of these. gonna take 500 with me any of these i should not pass up and at what price.

The easiest thing to do is go on gunbroker and look at the closed auctions for a few items you like. You can do that by logging in to gunbroker under your user name (you need an account) and hitting advanced search. Click on the completed auctions tab and search for the gun you are interesed in. It will list a bunch of auctions with the number of bids and what they sold for. You can click on the auction to see if it actually sold. Look at a few and decide what you are willing to pay. Dont forget, with most live auctions there is a buyers premium, so factor that in too.

I read through the list and saw a whole bunch of "tool" guns. All appear modern, plain jane, common, etc. In these instances, research the scopes, you might end up getting a Savage 110 cheap (or something similar) that has a good scope, like a redfield 4x-14 or whatever.

The only two that personally interested me are the BAR 22 and the Winchester 72. The 72 was a bolt action tube feed 22 made from about 1935 until 1963. There were factory scoped 72s, 72 gallery guns (IIRC) and grooved receiver guns. There were also 72As which were later. If its a grooved receiver gun, they are usually always over $300 and clean ones are around $500. The problem here is that most 72s are beat compared to say 52s, which were the deluxe target offering. 72s were more of a bolt repeater for the youngster.

I don't know much about the BAR 22s but see if its made in Belgium or Japan and see what kind of wood it has, checkered or not, etc. It could be a good gun.

As others have said, you have homework to do. Its not the kind of gun auction I would be interested in but if you're looking for a fair quality hunting rifle, then its the auction for you.

Also, there was no "Russian mauser" its probably a Mosin Nagant rifle or something.

thanks to both of you. this is just a local farmers auction. not just a gun auction and no buyers premium or transfer fees. hell ill prob just go and bid on the rugers and if anything else goes cheap enough pick it up also lol. prob worded my first post wrong was really just wondering if anything jumped out at anyone, to be honest dont know a whole lot about bolt action guns and that seems to be the majority of this collection so was wondering if anything jumped out at any one as being desirable or not easy to come buy. thanks again

Yeah, nothing rare or crazy there. It will be fun though. Auctions are a blast. That steyr 9mm might be worth looking at too. You might be able to get it cheap, as not a lot of people have experiance with them. Im thinking it will be one of the poly frame ones with the trapizoid sights. Google it and see what you think.

I would sure take a look at the ' Weatherby 308 g33/40' and the BAR 22.

Your pics should let you know if the Weatherby is a Southgate gun or a re-barrel.
I have personally only seen long action commercial mauser actions used on the Southgate rifles. Never a war2 action, much less a small ring. Sounds like a custom order gun with a customer supplied receiver to me.

If it is indeed a straight Southgate, I'd haul along more than the 500 to make a play.
The butt should say 'Tomorrows rifles today' if it is original, although some the earliest Southgates have a regular Pachmyer pad instead.

The wood stock would be a pronounced monte carlo with figure and contrasting wood for-end tip and grip cap.

Weatherby barrel markings with no sights. If there are iron sights, either a front with receiver sight holes or standard quality front and rear sights (again, that would mean custom order) I would definitely be a serious bidder. Iron on a Weatherby is considered rare.

It sounds interesting though either way and would be fun to look over.
Maybe post back with the hammer price on this one for me if you would.

If the BAR 22 is a clean straight grip gun (PG guns are more common) and comes up after the Weatherby, I'd be interested in that as well in the 300 range.

Those are the guns I'd check out. Most likely I'd bid on the Savage .22, Marlin .30-30, Ruger M77 .223, Winchester 1200, and Steyr 9mm.

Auctions are funny things. You might get a treasure for next to nothing and then spend the same amount for a piece of trash. Do your research.

On edit, remember there's going to be a buyers premium on top of your bid.

Last auction I attended I got 2000 rounds of brass cased boxer primed 8mm ammo and 5 factory colt 1911 mags for $300 bucks. You can do quite well with $500.

It really depends on your interests.

The Mini-30 w/ folding stock might be interesting.

If it were me, I would likely try to pick up the Taurus .38, assuming they let me inspect it and it passed.

That Harrington & Richardson can be fitted with a variety of rifle and shotgun barrels. Potentially a very accurate single shot gun.

man guys after all your great advice and help got called away out of state for work on the saturday before auction and didnt even get to go....so sorry to have taken up your time and brain cells asking for help. but work comes before pleasure and if i dont go to work wife dont let me buy guns lol
