Uberti Dragoon Notch in Lower Portion of Recoil Shield

Why is it that there is sometimes a notch out of the lower portion of the recoil shield on these guns? I don't think it's limited to just Uberti. The originals didn't have the notch. To me it seems random. I just ordered one and am hoping it arrives "notchless". Am I about to get my hopes dashed?

Thanks for shedding some light on this!

The only Dragoon I've ever seen cut is the 3rd Model (4 screw version). The 3rd model Civilian (3 screw version) doesn't have this.
Which did you order?

It depends if it is a "Civilian" or "Military" dragoon. The third model dragoon is the only type that I have seen the notches on. Some third model dragoons (originals too) were military guns, and were "notched" for attaching a shoulder stock.

I ordered a Second Model Dragoon. Tell me I got lucky! :-)

I hadn't thought of the notch to accomodate a stock. Thanks for the information and excellent links to pictures! It's probably not good to be learning after placing my order! I wasn't planning on installing a stock, so I think I did alright this time.

The notch is on both sides of the recoil shield and fits a corresponding projection on the brass fitting of the shoulder stock.

Second models won't have the cuts. I have two third models, one military one civilian. Both Uberti. Like them both.

Thanks for the great information and especially that last link! I'm amazed to have just learned this detail, after being a percussion revolver enthusiast one and off since the mid 1970's! HaHa! Maybe I knew it when I was younger and forgot it as I got older...

Thanks again for the info!
