New MVP

Only the second new rifle I have purchased. My 270 was just to much to take out to Wyoming this summer for Prarie Dogs and the occasional coyote.

There is a full weekend practical shooting competition at the range this weekend so I am hoping to get it sighted in and get some review info out soon.

The short of it is:
Mossberg MVP
predator model
Mid bull barrel at 18.5 inches
Nikon Prostaff 3.5 - 14 x 40 with BDC
Basic leupold mid height rings

Sounds great and you with the 223 you have the proper medicine. Hope you have a great time and the rifle exceeds your expectations. 17 HMR would work well too, but only if you can find ammo.

Yep this is the the one marked .5.56/.233. I already have a savage 93 varmint in 17 hmr. I love it but I have been looking for a predator/gopher gun I can reload. My .270 with 90gr sierras is a tack driver but it to much for the little guys. I also wanted to stop adding calibers. Seeing as how I plan on picking up an AR in 5.56 this year it is an even better choice. Add that your point on 17 hmr ammo and reloading will be a huge help. Can't wait to get it dialed in tomorrow.

Disappointing day at the range. Started at 50 then 25 and could not get on paper. At 10 yds I was 5 low and 5 right. On paper now but questioning my bases and basic leupold rings. Think I'm going to trade up to a one piece base and ring set. The gun is gritty action wise but as my best friend pointed out I'm used to a a model 70 supergrade and a very well broke in savage 93. So I am going to reserve judgement for awhile. The mag system is loose but I knew that from reading. If fit and finish is your thing don't get this fun it will annoy you. I'm also used to crappy mags from my Savage so once broke in I'm sure they will be fine. More info when I have it.

Did you try bore sighting it? Set the rifle on a rest (so that it doesn't move), remove the bolt, look through bore and adjust scope until you see the same image through bore and scope. That should at least get you close and save quite a bit of ammunition while sighting your scope in.

I like one piece bases but the two piece shouldn't keep you from sighting your scope in.

I like mine. It is a Patrol version and wears a HALO suppressor. One of the worst fit and sloppy firearms I own, however it is very accurate. Wears a simple 2-7 optic and groups 5 69s into 1.3 to 1.5" at 300 yards.

I think the MVP is a great rifle with lots of ranch appeal. it's high cap(ish), bolt-action, looks like a comfortable design and has cool looks to go with it. unfortunately I haven't heard any stellar reviews from it's buyers, lots of "meh". would be great if they could get it refined some.

I will admit I did not buy mine. I was skeptical of the accuracy and reliability given the sloppy fit and finish when I opened the box, but became more and more appreciative of the utility of it as I used it. If they made it the way I would like, it would cost a good bit more.

Look at a Benelli, then look at the same designs made in turkey. Is a Benelli really 3 times better? Well, actually, yes...if you use it a lot.

Kind of like Snap-On vs. Craftsman. If you use it everyday, you want the best. If you use it once a year, not a big deal.

I'm not down on the gun. I know what I was buying. It will do the job very well when I have done mine. I will say the while the whole AR mag is cool it is super sloppy and seems finicky. I wish they could have made that better since it was a key feature. The rest I like. The medium bull barrel is nice.

I've got the MVP Patrol version and I bought a 10 round PMag for it. It worked perfectly, no problems. And only cost about $13.

I plan on buying 2x20 round omega for mine as well. Glad to hear they do well. Taking it out Monday to finish dialing it in. Then it will be time to figure out reloading for it.

Well here are the results. 100yds 40gr vmax from black hills.

Top round was 50yd zero. The one below was a flier on the 5 round group. All shots from a hot barrel. Still on the original setup. Driving to WY Friday to try it out on Yotes and Prairie Dogs.

Looks to me like the rifle is shooting 1.25-1.5" groups from a hot barrel, albeit a tad right yet. And that is with 40 gr sizzlers, not the ammo I'd choose for top accurancy. ( for PD's sure) but that may be all you can get from your rifle with that slug/load.

Not all that bad, really. Congrats on your new rifle, I have followed the MVP closely, and the 18.5 Predator would be my choice, maybe, someday.....!

I plan on playing around with hand loads when I get home and one piece bases. It is tending right. Super bad wit 50 and 55 gr. what would you launch out of it?

Load up some 55grain vmax and some Sierra soft points, both are long time well performing bullets. The are inexpensive accurate and they will put game down with authority. I do really like the 40 round winchester white box bulk packs loaded with a 45 grain bullet they are very deadly out of my savage 11.

I have the 55 gr vmax from black hills. The are about 2 in groups right now. I needed something that was 1 in at 100 to take it to Wyoming this week. I'm buying dies and bullets when I get home. Good news is I will have 200 once fired to work with.

My Kimber Longmaster Classic with a 1:9 twist would not shoot mid weight bullets (50-60 grains) worth a darn. I tried lots of powder and primer combinations and was thinking of sending the gun back. I had some 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets on hand that I use for my 221 Fireball and loaded some. Wow ... a one-holer! Migrated to the Sierra 63 grain Semispitzer bullet and again, a one-holer. Some guns just don't like some bullets. Now the 63 grain Sierra's with H4895 powder are my go to load for this gun. It also does really well with 68 and 69 grain bullets.
