Another .270 question

I have loaded some test rounds using Reloader-22 as per Sierras load data. Would Varget, Benchmark or H-335 be acceptable powders to test? I'm loading the Sierra Game King 140gr hollow point.

The only powder I'm familiar with is H335 and I believe it'sa a bit too fast for best results except maybe with the lightest of bullets. I've never used varget or benchmark so hesitate to comment other than I believe you could use them but no real idea as to their suitability in the .270 Win. I've oly used H335 in the .308 Win. many years ago and in the .35 Whelen maybe two years ago.

With the 270 the fastest powder I have used has been 3031, and those loads were for my mom when she was still hunting in her early 70's and were pretty light, highly accurate, but light.

Varget would not be a bad way to go. It won't do anything over 175 gr bullets in the 30-06 case, but you are well under that.

I have had some outstanding results in 30-06 in TAC (very close to the same). In my case I am keeping them down velocity wise purely for target shooting. I see no reason not to get them up higher to hunt with though the range is not real wide it does show as high enough for good hunting load velocity.

I would query Varget and see what loads they would suggest or have listed.

I know the case capacity is supposed to be sub optimal (not filled enough) for the powder, but loads are listed and the characteristics are very good.

I do use magnum primers, not a have to but it was suggested and I have not done any real trials to find out why.

In 168-175 I am running 41 gr (minimum load) to 44 in the TAC. Good target loads, not sure if you can work them up to good hunting loads.

My $.02

Back in the day I dialed in R-15 with a 130 gr Sierra bullet. It was too heavy for prairie dogs but devastating on deer and antelope. I'm a big bullet guy and swear by the .270 in 130 gr. These were the days of multi deer and antelope tags in Wyoming, not shot one once data. It was a nail driver of a load. I could also let fly 50+ on a prairie dog town and not hate my shoulder in the morning.

Worth what you paid for it.

Reloader 22 shot under 1 inch on average in my Winchester M70 .270 with 140 grain Sierra Game Kings at 2950 fps at 3.279 and 3.290 OAL.
The accuracy dropped off to over 1.1 inch above and below that velocity.

My rifle seems to shoot 130 grain bullets more accurately than 140s or 150s but averages just under 1 MOA across all the loads I have tried, although only about half of the loads managed to average under 1 inch and most of them were with 130 grain bullets.

IMR 4350 shot more accurately than any other powder with bullets from 130 to 150 grains in my .270 Winchester.
It managed to take 6 of the top 10 powder bullet combinations measured and 7 of the top ten best loads with a top load of 0.522 average.
Reloader 22 took the other 3 best loads with a best load with a 0.614 average.

I have tried loads with IMR 4350, R-22, R-19, and Varget.
If you can find some IMR 4350, it might be worth a try.

What kind of primers do you use when using the reloader22? We're the 140 SGK the hollow point of SP?

Benchmark isn't listed as a powder appropriate for the 270 Winnie. Varget is, but doesn't look to be a hot performer. RL22 is a great propellant for the .270Winchester.

RL19, H4350, IMR 4350, IMR 4831, are the powders I use in my .270 for 130's to 150's, I can't comment on that Hollowpoint but I have loaded 140 grain Nosler Partitions with RL22 and had decernt results. As far as Varget goes, I haven't tested that in this caliber, nor H335....
If you don't get the accuracy your looking for try a Vitivouri powder equivilent.
