Jinks says Heavy Duty 1930.....Outdoorsman 1931.

That thing RogerC just got is a real drooler.
Awesome.

Okay, C.R.- - -

That probably settles the issue-- This explanation shows that BOTH sources are kinda correct. Of course, Mr. Roy Jinks is pretty much THE authority, being endowed with sources and wisdom far beyond that of mere mortals . . . .

Thanks, Mike- - - -
Come May, I'll owe myself a birthday gift anyhow-- And I can afford a good book easier than another firearm.

Caveat...........I have found probable error in Mr. Jinks information re a different gun.

Second and third sourcing is a good idea where possible.

If you have any Universal in stock try 7.0 gr with a 240 lead bullet. It runs 700 FPS in a 4 inch Taurus. Not a powerhouse but no cream puff load either.

Sam,

I've identified errors in the Jinks books, as well as errors in Supica & Nahaus, as well.

But when I was with NRA I had access to catalogs for S&W that stretched back to the early 1900s, and in some cases, before.

Great resource for confirming questionable points.

Back to the original question.

I too am looking for loads for the .44 Special. I've got about 8 reloading manuals (most of them are old) but very few contain info on this cartridge.

Do you have any recommended loads for a .44 special using Unique? Better yet if they include using Sierra 180gr HPs.

I am aware there are better, cleaner powders to use. But I'm too cheap to pitch out several pounds of the stuff.

Some of you didn't include what bullet weight you used with the load so I'm reluctant to try them as I have no idea what bullet weight was involved.

Elkslayer,

Unique is a fine powder for 44 special. Speer's manual doesn't list data for the 180 gr. bullet, so for that information, I would recommend starting with Alliant's reloading data. It's available on the web at:

Good luck.

Concur on the 7.0 grains of Universal with a 240 hard cast LSWC for 44 spec.

7.3 Universal for 44 mag.
