Stupid question about powder

For example is IMR 4831 the same as H4831. Does Dupont powders still exist or have they been taken over by Hodgdon powders.

It's hard to get info from local dealers as not much of the powder is used in Australia

IMR-4831 and H-4831 are not the same powders. IMR-4831 is slightly faster burning

Hodgdon Powders

Most of the Hodgdon powders are manufactured in Australia by ADI
AR2005 = H110
AR2206 = BLC2
AR2207 = H4198
AR2208 = Varget
AR2209 = H4350
AR2213SC = H4831
AR2217 = H1000
AR2225 = Retumbo
AR2218 = H50BMG
Most of Hodgdons shotgun/pistol powders are also made by ADI

G'day. Here are a couple of notes from the Sierra 5th Edition Reloading Manual, powder burn rate chart.

Quote:
Universal Clays should not be confused with Hodgdon’s Clays, or International Clays. These three powders are different and should not be interchanged.

In manuals or writings published before 1973, any mention of 4831 will refer to Hodgdon’s H4831. In older manuals, it was customary to list the powder simply as A4831” with no designation connecting it to the Hodgdon line. The reason for this is simple; prior to DuPont’s introduction of IMR 4831 in 1972, the surplus 4831 sold by Hodgdon was the only powder to carry this designation. Despite their similar nomenclature, these two powders (IMR 4831 and Hodgdon 4831) are not inter- changeable and must not be confused. IMR 4831 is significantly faster burning than H4831, and may produce dangerous pressures if used with data developed for the latter.

Here is the list of ADI / Hodgdon powders.

ADI / Hodgdon Propellants

ADI Powder/Hodgdon naming
AS30N.................Clays
Trail Boss.............Trial Boss
AS50N.................International
AP70N.................Universal
AR2205...............H4227
AR2207...............H4198
AR2219...............H322
BM2....................Benchmark
AR2206H.............H4895
AR2208...............Varget
AR2209...............H4350
AR2213SC...........H4831 / H4831SC
AR2217...............H1000
AR2225...............Retumbo
AR2218...............H50BMG

For more details on the ADI / Hodgdon powder look at this thread.

Dood Hodgdon and IMR are seperate. I have a 270 Winny. It loves the Hodgdon H4831, it gives a smooth slow burn that gives me over 3000ft a sec with sub moa results. If you were the PICASSO of reloading this would be common knowledge to you.

Knowledge is power shooter, the more i know the more of an artist i become.... well i hope anyway, these forums are a big help.

I believe it's Picasso, and his art looks something like this:

So IMHO, I don't think the OP is really claiming to be an expert at reloading.

(If Picasso was alive what would his art be worth?)

Powder

Since Hodgdons took over IMR we in NZ are able to get IMR powders as easily as Hodgdon but in saying that they are expensive and all of my rifles shoot ADI just fine so I tend to stick with that.
I am not sure if IMR powders are still manufactured in the States as The Hodgdon company tend to get most of their bulk powder from all over the world, most notably Australia
