Choke Tube for Slug??

Although I shoot a lot of clays, I never had the reason to shoot slug very much.

My question: if you are using a shotgun that has choke tubes, which tubes are safe to put slugs through?

I would buy a designated rifled tube if you were planning on being accurate with it. That being said all tubes should technically shoot a slug because they have to be able to so they comply with laws, someone cant grap a full choke and put it on a 12 ga and shoot a 12 ga slug and kill them or it would be the manufactures problem. That all said I would go with something right in line like improved or even modified at tightest but it shouldnt hurt the gun if you would run one through a tight choke but just dont try it

I used improved cylinder.

Remington has a handy document titled "a guide to shotguns"

It notes that rifled slugs perform very well with improved cylinder.

The ideal setup is a sabot slug with a rifled barrel (and iron sights)
(nice thing about shotguns -- you can switch things around)

Actually these tubes are for "sabot" slugs. The expensive stuff.

For "rifled" slugs, you are safe up to and including full.

This may not be true with some of the harder alloys but for the cheapest slugs that are dead soft lead you are good.

You might suffer problems by using "extra full" or some of the tighter than full turkey chokes.

I have a Rem. 870 Express Super Mag and I use a skeet choke when I shoot slugs. Never had a problem.

As noted, up to full is safe although accuracy may suffer due to slug deformation out of a tight tube. The rule of thumb is that IC works best for Foster/rifled slugs though some have better results with modified. My results have been best with IC.

Different choke tubes will do different to your slug as far as accuracy, make sure you shoot some test groups so you know what is going on before you hit the field.

Any time you change anything also, go shoot some test groups.
