Scope and Ring/Base suggestions

I just ordered a Remington 700 Milspec 5R .308 now I am looking for a good scope and base/rings to mount on it. I am considering the leupold 6.5-20x50 http://www.opticsplanet.net/leupold-...fle-scope.html

I will be using this setup for hunting and target shooting possible compitions. I will definatly be shooting at 600 yards and would like to be able to shoot 1000 if I wanted to. I am looking for any recomendations on a scope and a quality base/ring set. I know I want the picitany rail base. What is a quality option? I found some at neer manufacturing that look solid but they are a bit high. Should I be expecting to pay $400-$500 for good rings and base? I already have a harris bipod.

I'm kind of partial to Leupold Standard rings. With that 50mm scope, you'll at least need the tall rings - maybe even the extra tall.

I would use a one piece 20 MOA Picatinny base from egwguns.com 20MOA Picatinny mount for Rem 700

Rings would be Leupold's low QRWs QRW low rings

I have three Rem 700s that use this setup (.308, .223 and 30-06). They are rugged and allow me to quickly remove/replace the scope without loss of zero.

ETA: I took Badger mounts and rings off because it was difficult to quickly swap scopes.

The only other setup I would trust is from LaRue (but its a lot more $s)
LT-113 20MOA base
LT-719 rings

DnPRK is exactly what I would do as well. Im not a fan of Leupold scopes or optics but its tough to beat there rings and bases

I went with TPS (Tactical Precision System) TSR rings ($70) and a Ken Farrell 20MOA steel base ($100). Both are true picatinny specs. Not saying they're the best, but pretty darn close.

This was a dry fit only. Ring bolts were moved to opposite side upon installation.

I'm a fan of the Talley two piece mounts with integral rings. You can get them in high configuration at Midway for 45.99.

what about this

I set a Savage 110 up for FTR class and balked at the price of top shelf rings and bases.

I finally settled on a Warne 2o degree base, which was all steel and NOT cheap. But I figure I broke even by using Burris XtR rings.

XTR's are six screw, milled aluminum bases. They have steel hardware (nut bolt clamp) and the tactical look. Best part, is they are about half the price of Mark 4's rings and similar. I am aware of 3 sets seeing steady use on LE and F class rifles, w/ no probs.

I have had good experience with EGW rings and base.

Leupold, Redfield, Millett, Burris, Talley, Conetrol, Tasco, Weaver,,,,BTW, IMHO, under a hundred, for bases and rings, is all that is necessary!

That's top-shelf glass right there, you can't do better than that, except for maybe a USO scope. If you're gonna put that on your 700, you might as well do it proper and go with Badger all the way.

In the Nightforce manual, that comes with their scopes, they recommend never using twist in dovetail type rings and bases, ie. Leupold. Just throwing that out there.

The leupold rings I was looking at were the tactical style like the badgers. I don't think I will ever use the dovetail mounts. That just seems like they would be easy to not align perfect. I would like to keep all of my mounts the same brand. I will have to do a bit more research on the badger mounts. Thanks allot! Lol!

very nice

I think you made some outstanding choices. Next, Ammo, don't scrimp even for sighting in, everything will be about consistancy. I do suggest you going to Nikonhunting.com, click on the Spot On logo, there you can enter all your load data including the scope you are using to get all the information you will need after the bullet leaves the barrel. Keep us posted after you get sighted in, everyone loves pics too.

Mag Rife Scope Bases

If you are using standard calibers and non-magnum loads, I think most mounts will work. But if you are talking about Ultra Mags, or other Magnums, leupold and other light duty mounts will not hold up. I know from experience from using Leupold 2 peice mounts on my 8mm Remington Magnum in a 700 Remington Rifle. The weak screw head attachment did not hold up to Hot loads.

I do not know which ones I will pick but I am wondering about these:
